So this is an interesting question I think. Is Elias a Hall of Famer? Can probably go a few different ways with that one depending on how you choose to weight and adjust certain factors.

My first instinct is that I'd put him in, but I haven't looked at it in any detail.

I haven't either but my guess is he goes in

2 championships, franchise leader in most categories. Yeah, I think he makes it in.

Not sure if he's a HOF but he may be the most underrated player of his generation. He literally did everything well. PP, PK, protecting a lead, need a goal, he plays in every situation. In his prime, in my opinion, he was a top 10 guy in terms of pure skill, I watched him toy with defenses night in night out. His best season he put up 96 points. If he was on a more offensive minded team he'd be a 1200 point guy easy. Patrik Elias is nothing short of a beast.

Also, he has for years played wing and center depending on what the team needed at the time. He's unbelievably versatile in that regard.

I always liked him and he is a great player but judging from recent HOF selections he wont get in. Damphousse has very comparable numbers, all higher than Elias but he played more games, and he has not been elected in.

Elias 1187 games played 399 goals 601 assists 1000 points
Damphousse 1378 games 432 goals 773 assists 1205 points

I tend to agree. I have a feeling he'll wind up in that category of guys that were great but not HOFers. Guys that you wouldn't think twice about having on your team but can't really put them in the same category as the all time greatest.

I think he's had a fine career, I just think it falls a bit short of Hall of Fame candidacy though. No 100 point seasons or 50 goal seasons (yes, I know much tougher to accomplish these days). comeds nailed it, I would put Damphousse in before Elias and I don't see Vinny making it either.

Fair or not, I don't think that the average fan sees those championships as "his" teams. I think they think of the Devils' wins as being about Brodeur, Niedermayer, Stevens and Lou and they see Elias as a secondary piece.

Yup. Even from his own generation guys like Alfredsson (who I see as bubble) Thornton (probably get in once he's done but no sure thing) have put up more points and probably had a better peaks.

I agree. Such a good player all over the ice and a class act.

Lack of a really well defined and high end peak hurts him here.

He was never the guy it seems, just a damn good player. This will also likely hurt his chances.

I've always liked Elias, guy's a great player but I doubt very much he makes the Hall of Fame.

I hope he makes it but no sure thing.

In his favor compared to the other near misses or possibilities mentioned is this thread is his post season success. Whether the championship teams are seen by fans as his or not he has excellent post season numbers...the anti-Thornton if you will

I thought about including postseason numbers in my Damphousse comparison. Those numbers are pretty similar too. Elias has two championships to Vinny's one though.
I certainly wouldn't be upset if Patrik makes it, I just don't expect it.

I wonder if instead of being Patrik Elias from Trebic, Czech Republic if he were Pat Ellis from Kingston, Ontario if it would strengthen his Hall of Fame resume.

Well he'd certainly have a certain boldly dressed hockey commentator in his corner....
