That phrase gets thrown around here a bunch. I'd argue that them having a few extra red shirts is not deus ex machina let alone the ULTIMATE version.
I'm just trying to sound smart.

HAVING red shirts =/= deus ex machina.

Showing that they left with only 3 red shirts, yet having a red shirt appear every time they need to save a named character (at least 5 times) = deus ex machina.

This shit is getting full on retarded now.

The speed of Gendry, the ravens, and then the Dragons to get to those guys before they froze or died of thirst.

The Night's King with Uncle Rico-like arm a strength. Jesus, maybe don't show ballistics having no effect on a dragon if some faggot with blue skin is going to just calibrate his throw better than a marine sniper and take out a dragon with a fucking spear made of ice. That, or show how strong their ice weapons are. We already saw Jon fuck two of them up with Valyrian Steel. If those weapons can't destroy Valyrian Steel then they can't kill a dragon. That's the reason Valyrian Steel works. Because it's forged in dragon fire.

And why did he aim for the dragon flying around in the air instead of the one standing still with no idea where he was? Dany was on that one. He could have won the war right there.

How did they get all those giant chains to pull the dragon out of the water? Did they just find all those chains lying around? Is there some White Walker blacksmith out there? What was the reason they had them anyway? On the off chance a dragon died underwater? Why did the Night's King need to touch the dragon to bring it back to life? He brought back everybody at Hardhome without touching them. And can we all agree that the original actor who played the Night's King looked way better? This new guy looks like a crack head broke into the make-up department on the set of Avatar 2.

The Arya shit....what the fuck. She's one of the best characters in the books but damn if she isn't terrible in the show right now.

Good thing Dany had that very fashionable white dress that I guess kept her warm flying at a really high altitude for thousands of miles in the North.

And Benjen....guess we have to tie that up too. I noticed that the showrunners kept referring to him as "Coldhands" on the "Behind the Episode" even though we know that in the books Benjen is NOT "Coldhands". Why not just say Benjen? Has Coldhands ever even been mentioned in the show?

How come the ice gave in after the wights charged the first time, but then after they all stood there for presumably days and then all charged again at once nothing happened?

I just.....what the fuck man......what the fuck.
We'll the last one is easy. It's getting colder.

I've heard a theory that it was just bad editing. There were supposed to be 13 to start with and 3 were killed by the bear. So the shots you see of 10 people walking around were supposed to be after the bear attack and the shots with 13 were supposed to be before. The shots were just edited in the wrong order.

That could be completely wrong, but it does make sense given what we saw.

+1...

I still love the show. But I've had to eye-roll mid episode far too often lately...

- Drowning men in full armor emerging from watery depths somehow?
- The utter lack of care and sense shown with travel times... on multiple occasions
- Everyone agreeing to the ridiculous plan to go north of the wall to capture one skeleton to convince Cersei of the threat... (why would Cersei care?, that's not her character at all)... (and why would they care that Cersei cares?, she has no army to speak of)
- Benjen riding in out of nowhere at just the right time?

I would otherwise be lost in a reverie of truly happy, TV watching bliss... instead, the writers continually startle me with these amateurish flaws.

JMO.

Why is that plan ridiculous? You can't leave a capable commander even with smaller numbers in your rear and march off to fight on another front. C'mon.

Why would Cersei be interested? Self interest. She can't win. Dany can march and burn King's Landing any time she wants to. She's offering a truce in the 'game, so they can agree to fight the grumpkins and snarks. Even if Cersei thinks they're full of shit, she STILL takes the meeting and the offer, because she stays at least for the time-being ON THE GAME BOARD. Which is EXACTLY what she said in the end scene with her and Jamie.

Why is the RANGER Benjen Stark riding in to save the day? Couldn't just be that he was just trailing the Night's King? Nah. Wouldn't be that simple, we've got to start at the conclusion that these show runners who've crafted one of the best shows on TV, have just suddenly lost their grip, and can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

--

So far, I've heard reasonable critiques that the timelines don't match up. Yep, guilty as sin on that one. <shrug> Gotta' move the story along.

--

Btw, is that YOU G-man? How's the career and family going?

I was counting them as they left, and I counted 12 in a wideshot. I wanted to see if my 'Dirty Dozen' was a better comparison instead of the 'Magnificent 7.'

I used to love reading this thread after an episode to get the different takes and find things that I missed or dots that I didn't connect. Now it's just a bitchfest and I skip most of it.

Thanks fuckers. Now I have to log time above my pay grade and figure this shit out myself.

I think, in general it's a couple of things (and this isn't limited to this forum). You have people who were into the books and liked that the show stayed close to the source material for 4-5 seasons. No source material now and they are heading to a conclusion so the pace and attention to detail changes and that can be difficult to accept.

Then you have the haters who will find anything to be pissed at. Annoying but it happens. The haters annoyed me the last couple of seasons on TWD, but they were kinda right. That one has really gone downhill. I disagree here because some of the complaints have always been a part of this series. For example, the time travel complaint. Yeah Euron was everywhere early in the season and Dani had to catch a warp speed raven to save everyone this week, but it's not unusual for the series. Tywin coming out of nowhere into Blackwater and hitting the throne room right as Cersi was going to kill herself and Tommen didn't catch a second of flack. Littlefinger going wherever it advanced the plot early on didn't raise an eyebrow. The previews next week show the Unsullied marched from Casterly Rock to Kings Landing without a fight. The Lannister crushed other southern armies and after seeing the dragons aren't doing shit right now, so it's plausible. But people will gripe because in previous seasons there would have been a scene where Varys and Tyrion met in a brothel and discussed their troop movements with a pretty sweet lesbian scene in the background.

As a guy who got into this fairly late I say let the haters hate.

Its abundantly clear the clowns writing the show cant emulate GRRM. Things are happening so fast, I suspect its just to hide their inability to write intriguing dialog that is even close to GRRM when he was a beginner writer. if they could write... maybe they wouldnt need to rip out 1+6 episodes from the last 2 yrs. Looks like a very disappointing final 7 episodes... the worst part... a year + to wait for it.

What part of GRRM supervising the TV writers is unclear?

Which part of supervising means writing it for them?

'Do it again.'

Pretty simple.
Hes got a co-exec producer credit, hes done little more than outiline where the story goes. Its not a job he goes to. He takes calls from other exec producers. Writing dialog is not the same.

Here's some reading for folks caught up on the time issue for all the stuff beyond the wall. Turns out...its actually do able. Perhaps the writing totally lucked into it by chance, but its actually possible.

Let's do the Math on how long it would take a Raven to get to Dragonstone • r/freefolk

Also, for the people bitching about how GRRM will do a much better job and it will be nothing like the show

1) He's advising on the show. These are mostly his ideas. They're workshopping the plot together and D&D fills in the details in regards to the show.

2) There's no fucking way you know it'll be vastly different and better. The reason why we haven't had a new book isn't because he's lazy, its because he's written himself into knots and he literally can't figure out how to wrap it all up so he's stalling. It's much more likely that he's just going to take what the show will do and just paste in the details of all the book stuff that got cut out, which is probably going to be its own kind of mess.

So like it or not, there's a very good chance what you're seeing is going to closely resemble what the book will be (if it ever comes out at all). That doesn't excuse some of D&D's poor writing though*, I'm just saying its foolish to think the show is out there on its own, with no GRRM material, and that's why it sucks.

*I'm not talking about silly time issues. I'm talking about stuff like the Arya/Sansa plot at worst makes no sense or at best is just confusing because of how its been presented.

That would certainly be cool.

I still wonder who's setting up who here. I feel like Arya is smarter than to fall for any of his tricks.

Littlefinger's crafty, but I have to agree. These last couple shows have revealed that Ayra has picked up some serious skills. It really didn't hit me till I watched tonight. I think Arya is seeing where Sansa's heart truly lies and if Sansa fucks up. Ayra will break a foot off in Sansa's ass.....after she fucks up Littlefinger. I just hope Brienne doesn't end up a casualty in some way. Though I think Bri's ultimate demise...or survival will depend on Jamie.

I think so too...I have a feeling Jaime will die via white walker or wight dragon w/Night King while saving Brienne. Jaime & Brienne will be on the front lines vs the undead army since they both wield Valyrian Steel weapons.

GoT is my favorite show ever. For all the complaints about timelines and chains and convenient timing, it would bother me more in a show that didn't have Dragons, magic, and characters returning from the dead.

I read a few things...not sure how true. Apparently they did have dragonglass weapons, all of them. Also, you cannot kill a Dragon while it is not moving, only in flight...I need to see more about that, but I am leaving work now.

'Do it again.'

Pretty simple.
he doesn't fucking have his hands in the pot as much as you think he does. He "supervises" like the president of my company does with any work I do. That is to say, not at all. He is there for reference, but for the most part, David and Dan are off their leashes at this point.

George R. R. Martin on the One 'Game of Thrones' Change He 'Argued Against'

How has your involvement in the show changed over time?

I’m a co-executive producer on the show; David and Dan are the showrunners. Right from the first, we knew that they were going to do the lion’s share of the work, but I did wanted to be involved. Initially, I was involved in all the casting — I wasn’t physically present — I was here in Santa Fe. But through the wonders of the internet, I was able to look at all of the actors reading and to write them long letters and to have phone calls where I discussed which actors I like and which actors I didn’t like. And in the early seasons, I wrote one script per season. I would have gladly done more, but there just wasn’t time. I’m still trying to do these books. It takes me about a month to write a script and I didn’t have a month to spare, so I said, I think I’ll sit out season 5. I’ve sat out seasons 6 and 7 too, just trying to concentrate on this book, which as you know is massively late . So in that sense, my involvement in the show has diminished over time, though, I’m still here whenever they want to talk to me, and I’m always glad to weigh in. David and Dan have come to Santa Fe and we’ve discussed many of the ultimate developments, those landmarks that I spoke to at the end of the road that we’re both driving for. So I don’t need to be quite as involved as I was at the beginning.
