Actually, it's all about name recognition and hype.

ESPN is in bed with the SEC...so for everybody else, except those with a
name, it is an uphill struggle.

College Football always selected its National Champion based on "another man's opinion."
The last few years, they've allowed a pseudo playoff...BUT, it was "another man's opinion"
that got us the final four teams.

We're all familiar with the adage..."The SEC beats each other up." Catchy slogan used to
influence those that pick, in the hopes of getting two SEC teams in the playoff.

I'll give you a stat on that...

In the 84-year history of the SEC they have had 72 teams that have gone unbeaten
in Conference play. However, only 24 of those teams finished unbeaten.

The obvious logic is...48 of those unbeaten in SEC play got their ass whipped by someone
outside of the SEC.

We all remark, from time to time, about how College Football has the most important
regular season. There is some truth to that. But, where College Football really excels
is in "spin." Nobody can twist the English Language and Prey on the unsuspecting like
the talking heads for College Football.

to outofyourmind's point though, no one was running with USC consistently. when Pete came in the conference races went like this
2002 USC Tied for 1st with WSU AZst distant 3rd
2003 USC 1st WSU 2nd Oregon 3rd
2004 USC 1st Cal 2nd AZ st 3rd
2005 USC 1st Oregon 2nd UCLA 3rd
2006 USC tied for 1st with Cal Oregon state 3rd
2007 USC tied for 1st with AZ st Oregon state 3rd
2008 USC 1st Oregon 2nd Oregon st 3rd

in all of that USC never won the conference by more than 1 game. they either lost or had close wins every year except 2005 that year they pretty much dominated.

True, but imo, that just shows that entire conference was invested in taking USC down...as they should. To me, the fact that only PAC teams could beat USC and that USC never won the conference by more than 1 game shows that USC wasn't building it's record by "dominating a weak conference" as many have said. They were consistently winning a very good conference and facing real threats in most of their games.

no I agree but what I was saying is that's why the perception happened. if WSU or ASU had stayed more consistent battling for the top even if they were second every year people might have viewed the conference different

I think the conference would be viewed as a stronger conference if the same teams were battling it out for the top spot every year. The PAC has been a roller coaster for the most part. Even the bottom teams have had their runs. OSU had a solid run between 2000-2009. WSU had 3 years in a row where they won 10 or more games. Arizona even recently won the south and played in the Fiesta Bowl.

UW has the 2nd most wins in the PAC next to SC.

UW is not even a top 25 team all time. Historically it's USC and the rest, not UW and USC together leading the way.

Granted UW doesn't have SC's success rate, but it's still nice to see the two most all time winningest programs in the conference go at it.

UCLA also has more conference titles than UW. UW is the after thought in these conversations (hence the little dog)

I don't think they will carry the conference any more than people thought Oregon and Stanford were. I never saw it that way

What about Stanford? They currently run Cali, not SC......

Well Stanford is a team that a lot of folks have written off, (homerism get's blinding sometimes)
In which case is a huge mistake for Washington and Sc to under estimate when they play them.
Cause Shaw is highly under rated as a head coach and he will have a team in the playoff talks...
