Urban has one of the best current ones:

Assistants who went on to serve as NCAA Division I FBS or NFL head coaches:

These things have always been weird for me because coaches coach so long under so many different people usually.

Who gets the real credit? Seems like it's usually the biggest name.

Nick Saban cheated on this one. He just went ahead and hired coaches that have had some success as HC. Still incredible though.

I understand what you are saying. I think Ferentz was more influenced by Bill Belichick than Hayden Fry. I think Bob Stoops was more influenced by Bill Snyder, although Snyder was heavily influenced by Fry.

But, like Saban is showing now, surrounding youself with great coaches has a hand in having a great team.

Here is Fry's coaching staff in mid 1980's. Looking at it hindsight, they better have been good.

I believe Bill Walsh's coaching tree is the best ever, for the NFL that is....

College Football's Top Coaching Trees
College Football's Top Coaching Trees

8. Root: Don James (Kent State 1971-74, Washington 1975-92)
Branches:
Nick Saban, Gary Pinkel, Jim L. Mora
Saban’s tree has already been detailed, but James’ other two major proteges deserve notice. James may be a bit of an aberration on this list (along with Hayden Fry and Bear Bryant) in that the most prominent members of his coaching tree played for him. Saban and Pinkel played for James at Kent State. Pinkel then was an assistant for James at Washington. At the same time, Mora was a player for the Huskies’ coach.

I wonder what kind of coaching tree Bernie Bierman (most known for his 5 NCs for Minnesota). He coached Iowa Pre-Flight during WW2 where they brought in many great coaches to train the players. I am sure he had some good ones at Minnesota.

Fuck that cock sucker Bobby Williams. He was actually worse than John L Smith. Do you know how bad you have to suck to be worse than JLS?

If the NCAA wanted to do unprecedented sanctions, crush the program over these sexual assault cases and said we could only choose between JLS or BW, I would choose JLS giggling the whole way. At least he was entertaining and he won something Tressel, Saban, and Meyer never have; a Big Ten Coach of the Year.

And I used to say "smile" like that with a former co-worker.

Notre Dame sure does. They had Tyrone Willingham.

TW went 2-1 against MSU and 1-1 while JLS was at MSU. I'd call it a draw.

Yeah, but I bet ND had far better recruiting classes and more NFL draftees. He did about the same with far more.

TW

2002: 6 drafted
2003: 7 drafted
2004: 5 drafted

JLS

2003: 1 drafted
2004: 4 drafted
2005: 5 drafted
2006: 3 drafted

TW went 21-15 in three years at Notre Dame
JLS went 22-26 in four years at MSU.

So in one extra year, JLS accumulated one more win.
