I gotta go with Hayden Fry, Bill Snyder, and Frank Beamer. Fry because he had an eye for coaching talent like nobody else that will probably ever come along. Which I believe is an underrated part of head coaching. Snyder and Beamer are neck and neck for amazing program building. I give the edge to Snyder because Virginia Tech is in a better area to build a program. Kansas has little talent and the states around it are pretty limited too. Not to mention juggernaut programs north and south of them that also have limited talent in their states to fight with for what they do have.

Frank Kush was 176-54-1 at ASU (no prior HC jobs) with two undefeated seasons. When he was fired (for allegedly smacking his shit bag punter), he was still only 50. Had that dick bag punter's litigious family not forced the issue, he'd almost certainly be way, way up the career win's list. At that point he was younger and had more wins than Paterno.

The knock is that the bulk of his coaching was outside what we now call the P5. On the flipside, they still beat some good teams and were notoriously dodged by others to the point that they just went and started the Fiesta Bowl so they could get a game. When they did get the Pac 10 invite, they went 9-3 in their first year with a comfortable win over national champion USC.

Anyone voting for John Cooper should be shot.
He's the total opposite of Bill Snyder. Any reasonably competent head coach would've won multiple titles in the 90s with all the talent OSU had. Cooper was the worst big game coach I've ever seen.

He might not be the best, but I think Lloyd Carr has a spot on this list.

I went with Frank Beamer. He won a lot of games and put VT on the map.

Before Beamer, VT had a total of 6 bowl appearances in their history. 4 years after Beamer's arrival, VT made a bowl game every single year he was the coach, more than 20 bowl appearances.

He is also one of the few coaches who has over 200 wins in his career, with 238 of them.

Synder isn't a bad choice, but there is something to be said about maintaining success for a longer period of time IMO.

How long is long enough? He started in 1989. And he's still there. They were the worst program in college football for decades before he got there.

I lived in Manhattan during the 90's and I have a soft spot for him, but I feel like K-State had some good successful years and Beamer built a program that seems to have sustainability. Created a culture and things that just don't really exist at K-State.

I was just as likely to meet a Nebraska fan as I was a K-State fan, excluding students of course.

Both are good coaches, I guess it's just what you put more stock into.

K state has as close to zero talent as any program. Even after all of the winning with Snyder players don't want to go to K St. Beamer was in an area that was easier to recruit.

His inattention to recruiting was also a large component in ASU's fall from contention in the late 80's, which they've still never really recovered from.

And as per big game usual, he blew the rivalry game and lost by 3 scores to Arizona when ranked in the top 5, ruining what would have been an undefeated season and possibly a split national championship.

Now how is that even possible?

"Come to Arizona State. The academic standards aren't bad, and look at all the trim galavanting around campus."

Seriously, how has nobody been able to make ASU into a national power yet?
