Without reading any comments other than the OP. I would say the Chicago Cubs are the best team in MLB this year. If the Indians win the World Series, the Chicago Cubs are still the best team. The Cleveland Indians become World Series Champions. Not many remember the best team, they just remember the World Series winner ... Go Tribe!!!!
They didn't even play the same competition! You're wrong on this.

Does that make them the best team in baseball for that season? Were the 2001 Diamondbacks better than the 2001 Mariners? What if the Indians win the World Series this year- does that make them better than the Cubs, or any other team in baseball this year? I'm looking forward to interesting opinions
It means that they won the trophy, which is what every team sets out to do.

They may not be the "best" team, but they were good enough to be the last team to win a game.

People forget that the origin of the WS really was to determine the best team. Because you took the regular season champion from the AL and the champion from the NL and had them face off. This was when the two leagues were distinctly different entities (there really isn't a good comparison today, but think maybe when the USFL was at its peak having its champ facing the SB champ...flawed but about the best I can do). The leagues legitimately didn't like each other and really just wanted to prove their champion was the true baseball champion of the world.

They added the LCS in 1969 when they went to two separate divisions per league. Also it added more revenue as more playoff baseball games and media contracts.

The added playoffs were never about finding the "best" team. It was about generating more money and exposure for the game.

I argue like a millennial. lol.

"abstract thought tweaks my melon"
Borderline sig worthy to get someone to say you argue like a millennial. Thats the kind of thing usually reserved for the Politics Forum as people forget that millennials are educated and most of them are in their 20s and 30s.

It means no one will ever talk about the Cubs again if they win

Cubs fans should hope to lose if they want national relevance

Actually, you know who's going to be completely irrelevant if the Cubs win?

The White Sox.

I disagree. Cubs pretty much already have the 3rd biggest fan base and they've sucked for a long time. I think they'd close the gap a little between a Cardinals/Giants size fanbase to a Red Sox/Yankees type fanbase.

Note: this is all purely based on speculation. I just generally assume that the Red Sox and Yankees have fans everywhere.

I agree with this. If they win a WS, and have the success I think they will over the next, say, five years, I could see them being as popular as the Red Sox.

They're pretty popular as is.

I was in Louisville and Lexington Kentucky last week and the 4 fanbases I saw everywhere were Louisville Cardinals, Kentucky Wildcats, Ohio State and Chicago Cubs.

Everyone is on that Cubs wagon.

I think the StL Cardinals' home opener is against the Cubs next year. I'm thinking about going to that.

It means a long, drawn-out season is finally over and people can get back to concentrating on football.

So to conclude, Slinky claimed you can get lucky in playoffs, but it's not as often as in the regular season, and I claimed it is just as likely if not more likely.

I'm in the process of catching up with this thread

Slinkys sentence definitely went over your head on this one
