Well we're near halfway through the season so I figured I'd start a thread to speculate on potential firings as it's been a hot topic already this year. I will be doing a post individually for each level of hot seat ranking. These rankings are done in levels and each level is in no particular order.

Coaches who have already been canned:

Les Miles (LSU)
Ron Turner (FIU)

Hot Seat Ranking:

Scorching: Coaches who need an absolute miracle turnaround to avoid being fired, but will likely be fired in a few weeks.

Tim DeRuyter (Fresno State) - What happened here? The DeRuyter era got off to a hot start after he took over for Pat Hill, in his 2nd season Fresno State was ranked in the top 15 and unbeaten with future Raiders QB Derek Carr at the helm, Fresno State ended the year 1-2 and Carr went in the draft it has all been downhill since. It's hit a low point this year as Fresno State is 1-5 with their one win being against a FCS opponent, their season highlight was holding a 31-0 lead over Tulsa, but they still lost that game.

Rod Carey (Northern Illinois) - The Rod Carey era actually started in the Orange bowl in a loss to Florida State, and he went unbeaten in the regular season his first year, but it ended with an epic blowout loss to Bowling Green in the conference championship and a bowl loss to Utah State. Bowl losses have become a routine for Northern Illinois under Carey who hasn't won a bowl yet, things started going downhill last year and now with a 1-5 start including a loss to Western Michigan a team who previously was unable to beat them it appears Carey could be on his way out.

Mark Helfrich (Oregon) - The Helfrich era is quite similar to the Carey era above, he took over to keep continuity in a successful system and slowly oversaw the program fall apart under his watch. It's only 2 years removed from a national championship appearance but Oregon has gone downhill fast since the Chip Kelly recruits left, it's clear by the poor QB play and completely overmatched defense that Helfrich didn't recruit well and isn't developing players well either. Oregon is 2-4 and has lost 4 straight their only wins are over a FCS team and a team that lost to a FCS team.

Derek Mason (Vanderbilt) - Vanderbilt had climbed out of the SEC dweller under previous head coach James Franklin, under Derek Mason they quickly fell back to the bottom. Now in year 3 this was when Mason was supposed to see improvement, instead Vanderbilt has started 0-3 in SEC play but this is no 0-3, they lost to South Carolina and Kentucky as well as a Florida team that Mason's Vanderbilt team's have been able to play close games against but you read the first two...Vanderbilt has already pissed away their two best chances at a conference win.

Mark Stoops (Kentucky) - Mentioning Kentucky the Mark Stoops era has proven to be a disappointing one. He started with a lot of fanfare and starting bringing in recruiting classes like Kentucky has never seen. The problem? These recruiting classes haven't panned out. Kentucky got off to some promising starts but every year they fell apart to finish 5-7. Kentucky started the year by leading 35-10 over Southern Miss only to lose 44-35 to them. Kentucky had an absolute debacle of a game against Florida and gave up 42 points to New Mexico State. Kentucky has somehow pieced together wins over South Carolina and Vanderbilt and didn't get embarrassed by Alabama, so that slowed the process but they're likely one more embarrassment from firing Stoops.

Paul Haynes (Kent State) - Haynes took over for Darrel Hazel (more on him later) after Hazel's amazing 11 win season for Kent State...Just this week Kent State beat Buffalo for Haynes to match that mark and it's his 4th season. Basically you get the point here, Kent State has been awful consistently under Haynes. This year they're 2-4 and that includes a loss to North Carolina A&T.

So you wouldn't put Strong in that group?

Burning up: Coaches who are very likely to be fired at the end of the year, only a few might get canned midseason, some will survive.

Charlie Strong (Texas) :Strong's tenure has started out messy and he just hasn't been able to right the ship. Several times he's given the program signs of hope, beating Oklahoma last year and beating Baylor late, but with results like that there's been duds to make up for it most notably a 24-0 loss to Iowa State last year. This year has been more of the same there was the hope of the season opening win over Notre Dame, it looked like Strong had finally righted the ship as it turns out Notre Dame is very bad, then came the dud of losing to Cal, and following it up by having 3 extra points blocked in a loss to Oklahoma State. All would have been forgiven though if Texas could beat Oklahoma, but they failed to do so, it's still possible that Texas can improve but they can only afford 1 loss from here on out.

Kliff Kingsbury (Texas Tech) - I will admit this one might be a little high as Kingsbury hasn't had too bad of seasons. The fact is Texas Tech doesn't expect a great season every year, but in a year like this where a lot of the Big 12 is down and Texas Tech has a fantastic offense, Tech is expected to rise and compete for a Big 12 title, the problem is under Kingsbury Texas Tech has consistently fielded one of college football's worst defenses and with the offense about as good as possible...Kingsbury may have already shown the best it will get. It's possible that he might get a chance to try another defensive coordinator but we'll see.

Clay Helton (USC) - It's only been one year but it's USC. This hire felt like a lazy stopgap hire to begin with and it was a total disaster to start out with this year as USC started 1-3 being absolutely embarrassed in a pathetic effort against Alabama and then being dominated by Stanford, USC then lost to Utah in a game that they led most of it. Helton might still be able to save his job as USC has gotten two surprising wins over Arizona State and Colorado (wow who thought we'd say that) the past two weeks.

Darrel Hazell (Purdue) : Hazell was hired to turn Purdue's program around and thus far he hasn't he is 9-32 and in his 4th season at Purdue. They're still outmatched at times and it doesn't seem like this era is going anywhere. Only reason he's not in the above list is because of the 3-2 start but that includes a loss to Cincinnati who has struggled and they beat Nevada in a game where Nevada more self destructed than Purdue winning.

Tommy Tuberville (Cincinnati) - Mentioning Cincinnati, Tuberville is on the hot seat as well. After successful back to back hires of Brian Kelly and Butch Jones Cincinnati wanted a long term option to keep the program's momentum going while Tuberville took the job to avoid a hot seat year at Texas Tech. Tuberville's era at Cincinnati first went downhill last year as they were expected to win the American conference and instead fell apart to a 7-6 effort that included some awful results such as a 65-27 loss to South Florida and a horrific 42-7 thrashing at the hands of San Diego State. This year has not gotten much better, Cincinnati slogged their way by Tennessee- Martin and beat Purdue. They gave Houston a tough time through 3 and a half quarters before the wheels came off in a 40-16 loss, Cincinnati has not corrected the ship since, barely beating winless Miami of Ohio, and losing 45-20 to South Florida and 20-9 to UConn.

David Bailiff (Rice) - Bailiff is in his 10th season at Rice and it might be his last. He was on the hot seat a few years ago but then improved Rice to a consistent contender for Conference USA for a few years, then things fell apart again Rice fell to 5-7 last year and now they're 0-5 and quite possibly college football's worst team.

Ron Caragher (San Jose State) - Caragher took over after the successful Mike MacIntyre, he failed to take advantage of the momentum MacIntyre injected into the program, but Caragher created momentum of his own with a strong recruiting class. That recruiting class has mostly failed at this point and now San Jose State is in the middle of a horrible 1-5 season.

Brian Polian (Nevada) - Polian followed up the successful Chris Ault and has failed to keep the program going. Thus far Polian has yet to even have an 8 win season at Nevada, and this year might be the worst yet. Nevada is 3-3 but the best team they've played is a struggling Notre Dame, and the 2nd best is Hawai'i, Nevada was blown out by both those teams. Miss a bowl and Polian is out.

Brian Kelly will be in the lava category if he doesn't square himself away and starts shitting Tiffany cuff links.

James Franklin Penn State is on the list.

If Penn State would have lost to Maryland he was scorching.

I am not sure how long Penn State fans and donors will take 7-5 and 8-4 seasons. Ohio State has Urban Meyer, so the best Penn State can do is 2nd in the B1G East. With Harbaugh and Dantonio in the B1G East, it is even more precarious.

Not unless an Art Briles situation happens
Shit Saban survives that with ease. Find a jury in Alabama that would convict him of anything. Saban could r*pe a cheerleader on camera at half time and it would find a way to be "taken care of".

That and I'm at the age where I may not see tomorrow. Fuck it.............I'll sleep enough when I'm dead.

I think you're confusing Nick with Trump.
