I was lumping Anaheim in with LA but solid attendance is an understatement. I would call it fantastic attendance.
No matter how you want to look at it... LA is not a great sports town. It has a lot of similarities to Miami in many people there are not sports people, there are lots of other things going on, and there are a ton of transients.

There are but its a bit different than Miami. Miami and moreso Tampa Bay are fake plastic towns with no core. LA has a lot more hustle and bustle with real people living real lives.

Detroit and STL are similar but Detroit is bigger and has the Pistons. The Lions and the Rams likely had a similar role but now the Rams are gone, too. Functionally I see Detroit as a hockey town and STL as a baseball town but that might be a 1, 1a thing for both cities down the road.

There is a huge reason why LA didn't have an NFL team for over 20 years. Also a huge reason why the Dodgers were a laughingstock for a long time too, so bad new ownership felt the need to use shock and awe spending, and the inclusion of Magic Johnson to the ownership group to draw attention.

Because the NFL has been scamming other large cities to spend money on stadiums with the fake threat of moving to LA?

The problem with the Rams is easy. Its called Los Angeles Lakers, USC, UCLA, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Dodgers, Anaheim Angels, Anaheim Ducks, Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Clippers, San Diego Chargers.

They are just another brand unless they win.

I don't think you have been to Miami recently... Its growth is massive. Tampa I agree with. Miami is most certainly not a plastic town.

Detroit is a bigger baseball town than it is hockey. All sports are huge... But all you have to do is land in the airport at Detroit and look at the hats being worn. There will be 5 tigers hats for ever red wings hat.

College teams don't affect shit bro. Michigan doesn't cut into the Lions attendance and its got a bigger fanbase than all the LA colleges put together.

I can't say I've been to Miami or Detroit recently. I think the thing with Miami is that there is so much to do outside of sports and the population is really young and really old with not much in the middle. Thats not conducive to baseball viewership...or even Lebron viewership half of the time.

STL hat count is tricky. Its probably 6 Cardinals hats, 3 Blues hats and 1 Mizzou hat but you'll see them all.

Chargers fanbase is not in LA. Its like a 4 hour drive. More people drive from LA to go to Vegas than they do to San Diego to see the Chargers play.

You do realize sports teams pull in more than their own city right? There is usually a radius. STL Cardinals radius is huge.

Miami's population is very young. The old people all moved north to palm beach. The growth in Miami in the last 10 years is not rivaled by many other metro areas. Miami's biggest issue is the fact many people are from other cities and maintain those sports ties. Plus their franchises are all very new other than the Dolphins.

Interesting that a Sox fan would describe it a a "choke" and not a "comeback".

I view the Giants in '12 vs the Reds and against the Cards as two great comebacks. Not two chokes. I would expect to hear Reds and Cards fans to describe those series' as chokes, though.

But you call the '04 ALCS a Yankee choke-job?

I would call it both.

It was a great comeback and an even better story if you're a Red Sox fan like me, but...........................seriously, how do the Yankees lose 4 straight with that line up? To a bunch of idiots????

I totally understand this. They showed a study where something like 10% of the chargers fanbase was in LA. Out of the three teams (rams, raiders, chargers) the chargers had the least support among LA fans.

Also in regards to Miami... It has a massive percentage of the population coming from South America where soccer is the thing and football, baseball, and basketball are secondary.

I have a hard time believing that great baseball cities like Boston, ny, and Chicago would want a MLB title over an NFL title. Baseball fans are in the minority. I would take a white sox playoff appearance over a bears super bowl. It would be hard to find many people that would agree with me.

Having rooted for Boston sports teams (professional only) since the late sixties I can tell you that there are a lot of folks who would change the order of the pics under my avatar and put the Pats in 3rd place.

My guess is that the older crowd would lean heavily towards baseball and hockey and the younger crowd would go with hockey/basketball and football.

I understand this. I also remember thinking the sample size was a bit silly but certainly the Rams have the most fans. My point is that there is a large level of competition. The Rams will be fine but they have a lot of work to outseat the Lakers, Dodgers or even the Kings.

Median Age on Miami is 38.8. With not many people in the middle, its not super young at all. Also you mention that South American influence...I just dont think the majority of the Latinos have the same passion for sports..yet. This might be regional.

Is Boston more for the Sox than they are for the Celtics or Patriots?

If each team was realizing the same level of success I would say................ ABSOLUTELY!

I don't ever remember hearing about the Patriots much on Cheers. It was Red Sox, Red Sox, Bruins, Red Sox

That might have something to do with Ted Danson's character (Sam Malone) being a former pitcher for the Red Sox. Can't say I watched that show much so I don't know how much play the other teams got.

It did have a lot to do with him being a baseball player. I've been watching it a bit recently with the gf.

We also have Bill Simmons podcasts which gush over the various sports and he pretty much acknowledges that the Patriots are a lot more recent than the other fanbases and he is obviously a Celtics fan first but he did right a book called 'now I can die happy' so i bet the Sox are 1a. Boston is pretty much just a sports town now but I could certainly see the older population leaning towards the Sox.

You really haven't been to Miami in a long time... Brickell is nothing but 25-35 year olds with money. The entire Wynwood arts district is nothing but hipsters that are 21-31. The median age might be 38... and I would be interested to see when that last was taken... but there are enormous areas of the city where there are ten's of thousands of young adults. The eye test is all you need to realize this if you fly into Miami.

Miami Dade County may have a media age of 38... but there is no way in hell the median age of the city of Miami is 38.8. No way in hell.
