Why is Kobe Bryant getting the Derek Jeter treatment?

it was annoying when teams like San Diego were giving Jeter private cruises on the SS Grande Padre due to his retirement. And the so called hated Red Sox dedicated the national anthem after him, but now Kobe is getting this treatment?

At least Jeter was somewhat like able. Kobe isn't liked unless you are a Laker fan.

This is getting annoying.

Kobe is a top 10 player of all time with arguments for top 5 or 6. Jeter doesn't rank anywhere near that among his peers all time. If anything Kobe is BIGGER than Derek Jeter in his sport.

I'm a life time Kobe hater so I'm not necessarily enjoying it either, but when an all time great like this hangs it up I don't fault fans and teams for giving them this kind of treatment.

Sorry Charlie, but you are dead wrong - Kobe is well like and loved all over the world. Kobe is a ticket sellers - in his prime, fans came out to see him play even when they hoped Kobe and the Lakers would lose. In a recent game Celtics fans were chanting Kobe at the end of the game much to the displeasure of the old school Celtics fans who tried and failed to drown them out. Think about it, Kobe is so popular that even Celtics(the heart of enemy territory for Kobe) were chanting his name.

Kobe got that last 50 million for two years because the Lakers knew that in his final year, this would happen and Kobe would sell out every stadium. The NBA will make a ton of money off Kobe's final appearances around the NBA. I haven't exactly enjoyed Kobe's game the last five years, but 20 years from start to finish with the same team - carrying the team and etc is something you haven't much of. That has to be respected. Your Jeter is not even the same league as Kobe is in the terms of greatness

It'd be awesome if a team just didn't give a fuck during one of these lame ass retirement cruises.

You suck, your team sucks and you're only playing out the string for money and the city to city public handjobs.

Just retire.

Then don't watch. Or does your tv only get Lakers games on every channel? Not sure there is anything more lame than someone bitching about something as if they have no control. Next time, maybe you should try a dvd of a Britney concert or Channing Tatum movie.

Also, as lethal pointed out, Kobe is a top 10 player of all time. That garners a lot of respect around the league and fans want the opportunity to show appreciation for what he's accomplished in his career.

Probably the most perfect "goodbye" was given to Kobe last night by the Celtics and their fans. In a private moment before the game, the Celtics gave him a picture that showed him on the old parquet floor with a list of all of the dates that he played in Boston. They also gave him a piece of the old parquet floor.

Then, when he was introduced prior to the game, they gave him a standing ovation. During the game, they booed him every time he touched the ball and then after the game was over, they cheered him and chanted his name as he walked off the court. Leave it to the Celtics and their fans to give him the perfect sendoff.

I hate Kobe. Seriously.

But even I have no problem with his retirement tour. He's an all-time great NBA player and deserves the attention and respect he's receiving from every franchise. He and Duncan so far are the best two players I've seen from the start of their NBA careers to their end (eventual for Duncan).

Anyone complaining about this is just salty in general.

I really hope Timmy announces his retirement just before or during his final season. I'd love to see how teams honor him. I'd really be interested in seeing what the Lakers do considering all of the battles that the Lakers and Spurs had over the years.

My guess is though, that in true Timmy fashion, he won't say anything and will just quietly retire after whichever season he decides is his last.

This isn't like a Kareem retirement tour. Kobe didn't want that. He's getting maybe a short video and an extended intro (lots of accolades to mention) before games. Not much else really. Nothing to get your jimmies rustled over.

As a Celtics fan I can't say I care for the Lakers. And even though I have never liked Kobe this league wide tribute to him in his final year is well deserved. He's had a helluva career.

Agree. Kareem's farewell tour was really cool. Outside of the cheers in "enemy territory" and the occasional short video, it's pretty much going exactly how Kobe said he wanted it to. I think Kareem had a long ceremony at just about every NBA arena when he retired.

Maybe if he had one of those his old ass would quit hurting his shoulder every time he dunks.

Yeah in NBA he's definitely a senior citizen. He probably shouldn't dunk the rest of the year unless it's during the AS Game.
