Oh, so Michigan gets the benefit of the doubt, and time to evaluate a prospect, but Ohio State doesn't get similar treatment to do the same?

He suffered a torn meniscus in his HS final. OSU kept with his commitment, allowed him to come to campus to enroll early and only upon meeting with team doctors did they cut him from the team. No, it's not the same at all. He was literally on campus and was planning to enroll early. He was a different injury than he suffered earlier in 2013 which was an ACL tear. OSU knew of the injury and told the player that he probably just couldn't participate in spring ball. They kept him on and at the last minute, when it was obvious that they didn't have room, they cut his scholarship.

On top of that, he transferred to Auburn and is a full participant in everything -- he's fully healed.

So, no, it's not the same.

So two months after the injury Ohio State offered him a medical hardship....which is exactly what Michigan did to this kid. Also, according to top surgeons this kid for Michigan, "will be able to get back on the field and play at a high level"

Isn't Ondre Pipkins, the player that Harbaugh was trying to force take a medical scholarship, currently With Texas Tech?

This is exacly what MaB called out tOSU for doing. The exception is I do not see where the MI doctors have evaluated this kids knee. In the Buckeye case, the docs took their first opportunity to evaluate the knee and made a decision at that time. I dont see where MI has done that. All I see is the kids docs saying he will be able to play at a high level.

Hmmmmm at least Meyer had his docs look at the knee and make a decision. Shady is as shady does.

Pipkins counted towards our 85 player limit. He had a 4 year football scholarship injury or no injury. Harbaugh did want him to sign a medical hardship paper which would have opened up his scholarship, but he didn't and couldn't force Pipkins to do so. When he suffered a concussion in Spring, that was his second and 4th injury overall. Our doctor's confirmed arthritis in his knee and recommended that he did nothing on that knee for 6 months.

Ultimately it's his body to ruin, but I think it was the responsible thing to remove him from the game.

And, you know, the 5 months difference and opportunity to visit other schools. At this point it's not different than pulling any other kid's scholarship except that he's also offered a 4 year academic scholarship. He's free to take official visits elsewhere and continue the recruiting process -- not so much in the Ohio State case. Oh, and the fact that Michigan hasn't oversigned the class yet -- IE we're not cutting his scholarship to make room for another currently signed player.

The differences is the docs at tOSU said the kids knee could not take the wear and tear of football. However with the Harbs case, the ONLY docs to evaluate said it will be fine. You see the difference?

I don't think it really matters in the Michigan case....Harbaugh can pull a scholarship this early on for whatever reason. How is this different than pulling a scholarship for a kid visiting another school or something minor like that? Hoke did that all the time. Visit another school, get your scholarship pulled. Except in this case, Harbaugh offered him a 4 year academic scholarship. The kid has every opportunity to officially visit other schools if he truly thinks he can play again and commit elsewhere. It's 5 months away.

Yes because Harbaugh doesn't try and force players into medical scholarships.

Thats the funny thing! He doesn't need to force he can just end the scholarship. A guy has injuries and is questionable he offers a medical.

If I am a college coach I get it and agree. I still get fired if I am a good guy or a hard ass if I am not winning. SO I offer the medical and recruit a better replacement. It's not as if they get kicked out and have to pay for college. They still have a choice to go somewhere else.

Should we critisize 5th year seniors that leave a program for another school and don't have to sit out?

I think he signed a 4year scholarship. So no, he can't just end the scholarship.

It may be fine in a year or two. Nothing is absolute like a Buckeyes memory when their medical scholarship left to play for another school.

After speaking with Wilkinson after the story was published, Ohio State felt the matter had been worked out. Dean had sought a second medical opinion, worked with outside expert Dr. James Andrews, and said he he been cleared.

I am sure Dr Andrews is a pretty good reference to have.

It depends on what was offered. Not all universities sign 4 year scholarships.I believe USC does bt otherwise scholarships are done yearly.

He may be but he does not pay the bills at Ohio State. If Meyer goes against the docs at tOSU he will have problems in the future.
Harbs is only using his own medical opinion.

It doesnt matter when you are wearing those maize and blue glasses. Harbs is pulling the scholly because he things he has someone better that will sign. Yeah either way that is shady. He is the same as any other coach and its easy for everyone else to see.

I think it's a good deal- but also want more info.

If he takes the 'medical scholie' does that mean he cannot still play? Does it mean football is over for him?

If that's the case, if the kid may still want to play/give it shot at least, and may want to try elsewhere.

He'd need to look deep, and ask himself if he really, truly wants to keep playing. If there is any doubt, he should take the scholarship.
