True....but we have to rely on the same scouting reports and minor league stats that you see. I think these ranking services are in cahoots with the Red Sox to artificially increase their prospects' value. I'm so sick of hearing how great these guys are and then seeing they suck when I finally watch them in person. Bogaerts, Swihart, Webster, Barnes, Ranaudo, Lars Anderson, Lavarnway....etc.. I'm not falling for it anymore. Just trade these guys for ACTUAL talent while you can.

I like Baseball Prospectus and Baseball America. It seems to me that they rank their prospects not solely on potential, but proximity to the majors as well. That's why Swihart would be ranked as the #1 catching prospect. There are guys with more potential, but they're a few years away.

Swihart is a strange one to me because his numbers in the minors aren't particularly impressive. Five seasons with a .769 OPS? .717 in AAA? I'm not saying that's shit, and players can always develop, but I certainly wouldn't expect a guy with his minor league stats to be a game changer in the majors.

I don't think any of the major league clubs are even considering how BP or BA rank prospects, let alone rely on them. They have their own scouts and most, if not all teams at this point, have their own proprietary projection systems.

Not trading Swihart for Hamels was fucking retarded. The attrition rate of prospects is staggering. Hamels is a proven major league pitcher. Swihart has accomplished fuckall. Further, it's not like the Red Sox are poor - they can wade into the Free Agent waters and don't have to hold so tight to their prospects. Fucking stupid. A bird in hand is better than two fingers in some bush, or something like that.

I was going to say that perhaps the Sox need an AAAA team to bridge the gap between Pawtucket and Fenway. But then I realized, the Sox are that AAAA team. The organization needs a AAA.5 team.

I don't see how they can call up Rusney without moving Victorino/Nava first? They still don't have the room to play Rusney every day. And this would be just like the Red Sox, too. All 20 of the most recent guys to come out of Cuba are stars, but the Sox would end up with the dud.

Agreed 100%. I am so sick of hearing how awesome all these prospects are. MOST of them flop. I guess the Sox didn't want pay the money AND the prospect cost for Hamels, but someone else will. His contract isn't even that bad.
