Meh, Dreams by The Allman Brothers or any number of Marshall Tucker Band songs are better in my opinion. But really Green Grass and High Tides blows Freebird out the water.

We should hang out

Toy Caldwell and Hughie Thomasson are two of the most under-rated guitarists of all time. I also think Molly Hatchet was a more talented band than Skynyrd but people only remember them for one song.

I can see that and I agree with you. Albeit I never did like Led Zeppelen there are a number of bands that were more influential to music a lot of which preceded Zeppelen. All music was influenced one could argue a number of bands that Led Zeppelen took a lot of components of their music from

I'd always get fired up when I heard the opening notes to that great Outlaws tune on the radio...also loved their cover of "Ghost Riders in the Sky".
Anybody else a fan of "Edge Of Sundown" by Molly Hatchet?

Wait...do you like money, too??? We should TOTALLY hang out.

Hatchet's version of the Allman's Dreams is even better than the original.

Sorry KS...I got into Molly Hatchet before the Allmans. When I was about 10 or 11 I got hold of their self-titled 8-track and played that thing non-stop. But no doubt the Allman Bros were way more influential to a lot of late 60's and early 70's artists, and were very helpful in launching a few other careers.

OP should like him some MTB, since they were the inspiration for the Wyoming Cowboys' logo:

Top 3 influential besides Beatles....

Zep
Dylan
Nirvana

Could be argued between them and Neil Young, but they deserve more credit in this thread FFS.

I mean they kicked the teeth in on metal and ushered in a whole new sound, changing the next 20+ years of rock music, forcing bands to adapt (Metallica) or disappear altogether (Megadeth).

I was graduating at that time. Have seen Nirvana live a few times...they were fun.

PERSONAL OPINION ALERT!
I'll take the Melvins and Faith No More/Bungle all day over Nirvana.

Another "southern" rock pillar that always seems to be overlooked or forgotten in some of these discussions..that are still influential, is one of my old faves....Little Feat.
They had it all. Great songwriting, awesome sound, solid frontman & lineup (they did blues, funk, rock, soul, jazz, country, ballads, but had their own distinct flavor....and were 2nd to none doing live shows). I'm slapping myself on the forehead for not listing them in my earlier post.

I'm also gonna take this moment to mention another influential band and another fave of mine..
the Beach Boys. nuff said.

Little Feat I can stand some of, but not one of favorite southern rock bands. As to the Beach Boys, yeah influential but Jimi said it best in Third Stone from the Sun:

So to you I wish to put an end
And you'll never hear surf music again

The Beatles did cite them as major influences and Brian Wilson was a genius... though that word gets tossed around way too much.

I like Little Feat. One of those groups that just sounded better live than in the studio.

this belongs in the category of:

"Songs to hurl to"

Pure fricken garnage...........While your at it,why not listen to Sweet Home Alabama.

and our favorite trolling thread curmudgeon is back.

I think Free Bird & Sweet Home Alabama, like Stairway & Whole Lotta Love give people who know them only from the radio a jaundiced impression of those 2 bands. Both made tons of terrific music that gets little if any airplay.
