According to Evan Grant, Fielder has had a stiff neck since 2013 that has gotten worse. He did not receive a physical when he was traded to the Rangers.

I'm not sure if I believe he didn't have a physical.

If they didn't do X-rays and an MRI of any areas where injury had come up in the slightest ever, they are complete idiots and deserve to get hosed on the Fielder trade. Thats just asinine and doesn't make sense at all

holy fuck prince fielder has herniated disks? News to me. There is no "playing through" a herniated disk. Its a significant injury. I don't recall remembering it happening to a position player, but when it happened to me as a pitcher, I missed 8 fucking months and i dont think my career was ever the same again.

So like my post I pointed out earlier... when we keep saying "how could it get worse?" it keeps fucking getting worse. Might as well play frisco's lineup and rehab our whole starting lineup. Cuz all of them are bound to get hurt at his rate. Prince has never had injury problems in his whole career. That's how this season is going. I mean seriously, why would we not bring up as many of our promising prospects as we can at this point? Let them get big league experience. Everyone else is getting hurt. There must be something that we're doing, offseason wise, that would torment us this much. It has simply gone past the point of coincidence. This is like the 14th player

It's not a 'standard', (it's done, it's just not an automatic) to do full physicals during a trade (according to AJM at LSB) who I believe and I haven't done any research myself because what difference does it make now, but this is not a 'standard trade' this is taking on a big contract until 2020..

According to Daniels himself it was a bang bang deal, no question JD should have made the trade.

But with those many years, that much money. I don't see the reason to say in the offseason, "pending a physical" as a precaution, it doesn't matter if he'd never been hurt, it makes absolutely no difference.

Would anything have showed up? Well, part of these physicals are a lot of questions for obvious reasons...and if Fielder had mentioned that he did have some stiffness last season, it should have prompted an MRI for precautionary reasons. Fielder is obligated to be truthful, but he was never asked. And it's possible Fielder might not have thought much of it, so if he's never asked and he doesn't think it's serious until it bothers him again....well, here we are.

it's ah, pretty disappointing. I had wrongly assumed both players had passed physicals.

This is just a surprising finding period, even forgetting Fielder.
Someone is traded with a 6 year big money contract, and a physical isn't considered necessary
But a FA for 7 years, you get a physical?

What am I missing here?

Well, it could worse the way things are going, so..... whatever. Hope for the best considering Fielder.

After Class A prospect Joey Gallo blasted three home runs Friday night, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels was asked about the possibility of Gallo moving up to Double-A Frisco.

"He's forced the conversation on some level," Daniels said. "But nothing immediate as far as Frisco."

That doesn't mean Gallo couldn't get to Frisco, 40 miles north of Arlington, before the season is out. He has 17 home runs to lead all minor league players, but needs to cut down on his strikeouts. He struck out 172 times last season but has shown better plate discipline this one.

"He's done great," Daniels said. "Not just the power. He's really made some strides defensively and really made some strides with his approach and plate coverage. The day we signed him he had as much power as anyone in the game, just a natural gift. He's really made some strides in other areas and the results speak for themselves."

Feliz getting closer: Neftali Feliz has had two consecutive scoreless appearances at Triple-A Round Rock and Daniels said he's been feeling fine. But the right-hander must still show he can pitch back-to-back days and do so effectively and without pain before the club will discuss getting him back into the bullpen.

Seems like JD had an opportunity to move Ian and jumped at it without doing his due diligence, just to grab Prince and unload Kins at whatever cost and now its gonna cost him. Absolutely ZERO reason with that kind of money and years on the table for BOTH players not to have undergone complete physicals, MRI testing and every other test that is protocol for most MLB teams. The Rangers organization shit the bed on this one and there is no other way to put it.

Standard physical would not have revealed anything... it was mentioned in the article.

I like Odor, but Sardinas deserved the start today after his game last night. I think these types of moves are part of the problem. There's no chance for some of them to get comfortable at the plate. They could be cold for game after game and then have a good one and be out the next day. It makes no sense. I don't care about R/L. They will have to hit both in their career.

It simply isn't true that a 'standard' physical could not have caught this. They do in fact, catch things, and we all know deals can fall apart or be re-worked.
If I go to the doctor and say I've had some neck stiffness, arm pain but it subsided...it may not automatically prompt an MRI, but it would prompt the Physician to tell me if it continues, it will be scanned. In this case, there wasn't even a visit to a Physician, who by the way, isn't going to treat my neck stiffness the same way he would treat Fielders. They report any finding to the FO, and recommendations.
Let's not confuse an MLB 'standard' physical with your own 'standard' physical.

The Rangers last December were involved in a deal and a "standard" physical stopped the transaction and it wasn't in the same universe that this trade was, in terms of money and years.

Someone in that transaction, needed to take a deep breath. And anything they could do within their power, to prevent what has happened... should have been done.

If a Physician asks simple standard questions, "anything that bothered you last season, did it subside, what were your symptoms?" Unless Fielder would have lied, he mentions the problem with the neck pain, that's reported to the FO...and what anyone do if you are looking at a 6 year deal? You ask for it to be scanned.

Nothing can be done now, except hope for the best. I have no doubts some tough lessons have been learned, regardless of what the FO is telling the public.

Obviously I agree.
Just so I'm clear, I'm not calling for the FO's head. But to say they are completely innocent and nothing could have been done, is not true.
I have a feeling they will never make this mistake again...it's a horrible way to learn, but hopefully it can still work out with Fielder.

The way we've been swinging the bat, maybe facing a knuckle-baller will help. Can't hurt really.

Today's game is on FSSW again, and the weather is fantastic. Let's hope today's game is as good as the weather.

I'm sure most have seen this:

Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu, the major league leader in home runs, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with tendinitis in his left ankle.

The White Sox announced that Abreu has been diagnosed with posterior tibia tendinitis in the ankle.

Why wait, move him up to Frisco. He is kicking high A ball pitchers butts. Nick Williams has also been hot lately and hit 3 doubles last night.

If the team or fans are really and truly worried about what the A's are doing then there's really a huge problem there.
I am only worried that I will be able to keep my sanity watching sub-par baseball for the remainder of the year....I thought these days were passed us!!!

Not likely to play through it at all, he's going to miss some time and it will likely be one of those things that plagues him the rest of his career. Never hardly missed a game before heading to Texas, now he will have extensive DL stints every year before he just retires. Don't know when the bad voodoo started but it can freaking end any time now

Maybe what I should of said is our only hope is that he can play through it because if he has any sort of serious surgery we will lose him for at least the season... If not his career.

It's been a very rough stretch but I don't think the sub-par baseball will be here to stay as a fixture. This may just not be the Rangers' season but I hardly think we'll go back to those days of an irrelevant MLB franchise.
