Oklahoma is getting ready to plunk down another $350 Million to $450 Million in its football stadium. This shit is out of control. I know we have to do it to stay competitive with other schools but where is the breaking point? My wife and I contribute generously to both the academic and athletic sides at OU but something about this is troubling at a time when the average student is busting his/her ass to make it. Yea, I know OU is one of the few schools that have a self-supporting athletic department but still........ Makes me wonder what's going to happen when the bubble bursts someday. How much is your favorite school spending on sports?

I know how you feel. Oklahoma had a piece of shit (for a very, very short time who HATED sports) and the University of Washington suffered through the same thing. Those kinds of people are all elitists. And liberals. And quite ready to push their social agenda at any cost.

Gotta impress those teenagers.

Would be cheaper to hire Auburn's bag man.

Oh, and can they just give the Gaylord family back their money and take that stupid name off the stadium. Their name has no business being there.

Oh, and can they just give the Gaylord family back their money and take that stupid name off the stadium. Their name has no business being there.

This is a sore subject to a lot of Oklahomans. The Gaylord family has a history of this kind of stuff: saying just what needs to be said or doing just what needs to be done to boost their image. They have had a hell of a time with drunks in the family (including the women) and it doesn't ever seem to make news in the Daily Disappointment. Hmmm, curious. They also gave enough money to get the journalism school named after them which is a farce since the Daily Disappointment is one of the worst newspapers in the U.S. When the Gaylords (finally!!) sold the paper, it was to a another group of nuts----the Anschutz Corporation run by Philip Anschutz. He's a real doozy. One other smoldering problem at OU right now is the band. The new director, Justin Stolarik, isn't worth a shit. He brought all the ideas he could steal from Wisconsin and the band damn near revolted last season over all the Big 10 themes he likes to use. And talk about a poof! David Boren has generally done a good job at President at OU but some of his decisions have really stunk. Hopefully Stolarik will move on soon but Boren loooooves the Gaylords so the stadium name sticks. They got their name on it for $12 Million.

Kind of disappointed OU can't sack up and make the GAY 100K + in seating. Enough of this 80K crap, follow Texas's lead and make that bitch 100K +........

That thing would fall into the earth if they try to add that many seats. It's straining to get to 90,000 which will make it a nice looking stadium. I'm just waiting for the day for the next step when schools start adding domes. Texas has a stadium configuration where you couldn't do it. Schools like Oregon would have the stadium configurations to do it if money is ever wasted in amounts that would boggle the mind. Other schools like Ohio State, USC and Michigan have stadiums that can't realistically be domed. Most stadiums can't be domed. Somebody might be fool enough to tear down their stadium and build a domed stadium. USC could be the type of school that would just build a new domed stadium.

Our stadium was originally built to be an actual 'Football Stadium'. We never had the 'luxury' of having a track running around the field in our stadium. I guess most Texas fans don't remember that monstrosity that gave you an extra 20 yards of real estate to put seats in. All those years, and never being able to get close enough to the field to see the game.

Support the academic side more. At least that's something you can personally control since you're a donor.

How is this concerning? Y'alls stadium is going from 82k to 88k. Big friggin deal.

OU's facilities are a joke compared to most of the other blue bloods around the country right now. I've seen tours on youtube that had me chuckling. This comes directly from the mouth of recruits who've visited too. Trai Mosley visited both Nebraska and OU and said it wasn't even close. Your guys' shit is outdated. You need this to stay competitive.

Or you could just say no to improving your facilities and all those students busting their ass can just choose a nicer school to go and bust their ass.

It's been a decade. You guys are long overdue for a facelift. 350 million spent on facilities over the period of 10 years is pretty much the status quo.

A third of a billion dollars or more for a place to play 6 games a year is ridiculous. Does OU have to do it to remain competitive? Yes. Is it reasonable when students are having a hell of a time just paying for their college education? No. Is that the way the world works? Yes. If Nebraska's facilities are so much nicer than Oklahoma's then that accounts for NU having a better team than OU over the past 15 years. NOT!!! Facilities are important....even very important....but they aren't everything. And an all out arms race is a high price to pay for being competitive. Unless you're Texas and money means virtually nothing. OU's done a great job over the past 50 years and we've never had the absolute best facilities. We'll always be a bit behind someone else who wants to spend a bit more. Bottom line: spending billions and billions of dollars on sports facilities is a hell of a way to spend money.

EXCLUSIVE: OU Set To Announce Football Stadium Expansion - News9.com - Oklahoma City, OK - News, Weather, Video and Sports |

I understand the concern, but stadium expansion is one way colleges acquire additional funds for the schools overall budget anymore. More and more states are cutting university budgets in order to balance their own. Husker stadium now holds more than 90000 people and long before I die I am sure it will be expanded to over 100000. As long as they can sellout they will expand and again some of that money is now being poured back into the college budget. Will our bubble burst? Doubtful, what else do we have in Nebraska but college football?:yahoo:

I have attended 8 games in Lincoln....won some and lost some....but I've seen proof that the Huskers are the best fans in America. Growing up I had two pennants on my wall: Oklahoma and Nebraska. Big Red all the way.
