BOING!!! I mean BOEING!!! I mean BINGO!

That was the one that came to mind for sure. Charlotte was rumo(u)red to be one of the candidate cities, but I don't think they were willing to cough up enough dough for it.

Which surprises me given how much they've offered to companies like Chiquita, MetLife, and Electrolux (among many others). Not to mention non-corporate entities like the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the US National Whitewater Center.

(For the record: I take no issue with the Whitewater Center, because it's also used for non-private activities such as Olympic Team training and the US Olympic Trials)

Agreed. You seemed to imply in your first post that this is limited to sports franchises though, which is what I took issue with.

No, I didn't mean to imply that. There is certainly other corporate welfare. But it seems sports teams are ALWAYS looking for it. Most of them are already in monopoly businesses... so I guess they want to play with Monopoly money.

No, instead they put it out to a competitive bid to see which city/county/state can put together the best package of incentives for tax breaks, relocation costs, etc.

(Maybe not FedEx specifically, but huge, profitable companies do this all the time.)

Thats how I ended up posting here.

Looks like the Doobster is a better fan of my team than most of you. Pens could tax me @ 50% before I would complain.

Maybe they should tax you to keep the Panthers in Florida doob. After all it's alsways good to have a team that you can always beat...

I think people who don't want to pay taxes for the home team should just move. This isn't just about their fan support, it's also about injected additional revenue to the local businesses. If Sunrise isn't willing to pay, Panthers should move to a city that is willing to pay. Simple solution.

Nobody likes taxes, but for essential services such as road and sewer maintenance as well as police and fire departments, I'm more than happy to pay them. If a private enterprise (such as a sports team) is struggling due to lack of fan support, then move the team. Also, there have been numerous studies done that really brings into question how much economic impact a sports team and their stadium/arena actually bring to a city.

This is true, sometimes the economic benefits really aren't worth it. If such is the case, I think it makes sense for the city & the team to part ways.

Doob I'm not looking to start an argument but would you have felt the same way back in the 70's or 80's when Pittsburgh was struggling to keep their team before they had superstars on the team and you could swing a dead cat around the Igloo and not hit a fan?

There are fans and there are dedicated fans but the decision is made by the owners that look at fannies in the seats and things like merchandise sales. Back then Pittsburgh was not doing so well.

IDK, I personally would support the Pens with my tax money if it came to that again. At the same time, most people here have stated that increasing taxes to fund a private organization is unacceptable. If you can't increase taxes for the team and the team doesn't bring in revenue, then what other options are there? Really the NHL will have to buy them out and that's really not fair either.

The first line is one of my favorite lines ever. What happened Doobster? Were you not getting enough attention so you decided to be an abrasive idiot to get more?

Strong outlet shopping!

it does have an entertainment area with many restaurants right across from the stadium. it is why they started adding the parking cost into the ticket because everyone was just parking across the street and walking over.

florida owners would have been better if they lobbied harder to be in the metro division too. arena actually get half full when the devils, rangers, and pens fans show up for their home team.

How is it abrasive and idiotic? The first line was a typo, I meant to say they should be prepared for the team to move.

Doob, you have to realize that the Penguins were in a similar situation years ago - you should be thankful that Mario came along and saved the team - if it wasn't for him, Pittsburgh wouldn't have had a team anymore

There are passionate fans in every fan base - I want to see the Panthers do well because I think it would be great for the league to see a consistently good Panthers team and have fans come see these guys play - it's a nice city, it should be a good place for people to come 24/7 365 when it comes to nice weather and amenities - imagine if the Panthers can get a really nice player or two in the next two drafts or so + they go out and sign some FA's and swing some deals like they've said they do + the development of young guys like Jonathan Huberdeau, Aleksander Barkov and Nick Bjugstad - this team can be good

Don't sleep on them and shut them out - it's not fair and if anyone should know it's you

EDIT: Look at Tampa Bay, they have a good team and the fans come to games in Tampa every night - if the Panthers start getting a good team I think the same thing will happen in Sunrise
