I actually think 13 mill is very reasonable for Cruz. And if the team welcomes him back with open arms and it sounds like they would then why not. I know everyone thinks of the play in game 6 but he has been a big part of our success and fits in great with the team.

$13.3M was the qualifying offer last year. Some talking head said it would be more like $14M this year. And that is a one year deal. If we use the Melky Cabrera 2 year contract with the Blue Jays as a model, Cruz and other suspended PEDs players may be looking at that as well. Melky got a two year $16M contract. He was represented by ACES, which is now also Cruz' agency (he fired his old agent after the PEDs announcement). Of course an OF with Nelly's power would probably have a larger price tag. If he was clean or cleared of the PEDs he would have been looking at a multi-year deal of 5 years and whole lot more money. So should be interesting to see the final price tag and length of contract for Cruz.

You've got some good points. But I'm looking at this "strictly" from the Rangers standpoint. And the fact of the matter is, we REALLY need a 90 RBI for the OF next season.
That's why we must work a deal for Trout during the off-season!

Seriously, we need to work a deal in the off season for a big OF bat - Cargo??? I'm not saying btw that we shouldn't sign Cruz, but it should be at a reasonable price, and he should primarily be DH.

Plus he has made some game changing plays in RF this year and he has a gun for an arm. I for one say look at the whole body of work and not just the 50 games. He has had some big hits this year to keep us afloat.

It will be interesting and I am hoping that because of all of this it plays out in our favor.

Garza is no savior but he is a guy that goes 6-8 innings giving up 2-3 runs a game. That's very solid in you're rotation

I'm playing devils advocate with ya: What if Garza goes 6-2, with a 2.80 ERA for the rest of the season, and then pitches effectively in the playoffs (hope, hope, hope). Someone may step in and give him 5 years at $90 mil. Are you/us willing to do this?

And keep in mind, we're gonna have to pay for a decent to good bat in the off season too!

That's a 60% raise after sitting out 50 important games! I would not do this (ok,ok, that's why I'm not a high powered GM). But this really doesn't make much business sense to me. I would offer him exactly what he made this year for 2014 with escalators for another 1-2 years if he performs. He shouldn't be rewarded for the foolish decision he made and what he cost (or potentially cost) the team this year...if we lose him, we lose him.

I agree with your sentiments and business sense. However, if we do not offer him the qualifying amount, the way I understand it, we lose out on a compensation draft pick. Thinking FO would want that. Plus with Cruz hiring the ACES gang to represent him, doubt he takes a one year qualifying offer to re-roll the dice as a FA the next year. Thinking ACES group tries to get a "Melky" 2 year deal for him.

I'm with ya on this! And I don't see Gentry losing too much time to Murphy, due to him primaily being a CF. But I'd like everyone slow down on HAVING to have Garza. First, let's see how he pitches for the rest of the season. And second, if he does really well, it's going to cost a lot to get him back! I mean a lot! And he'll be 30 years old in Nov! So this is his only chance are probably signing for the big bucks!

I can agree with the wait and see approach but good pitching should cost more than anything. And if we have that opportunity and Garza performs as he has been this year then I say go after him. I like the guys makeup. Nothing tentative about him whatsoever.

With you all the way on that. Top of the line rotation guy has to take priority over a bat. And that would be a reasonable contract.

How is Rios defensively (range wise/arm wise)?

I feel like he probably is just average

I would have a hard time giving a 30 year old pitcher a 5 year deal - 4 years at $18m I would consider withe stats you present...unfortunately the Anibal Sanchez contract last year has set the market at this level, and Garza is better than Sanchez...

Healthy Harrison, Yu, Holland, Perez, Healthy Lewis? No way we pay that amount for Garza. Garza will most likely be wearing a Dodgers uniform next year. I would say Angels but they are spent.

It was me - yep, it was a 2 year deal for $16m and $10.5 was paid in 2013... But I still wouldn't do it - a 26% raise....nope...

Healthy Lewis? Wonder if he could put in a full year in anymore. And a FA as well after this year. He'll come on the cheap though.
