Trey Edmunds no longer listed on the depth chart. Hope that means he's going to redshirt and play LB!

hokiesports.com :: Football :: Depth Chart

he was never listed on the depth chart to begin with because he has always had 4 guys ahead of him and they only show three strings. Nothing has changed here. The plan is for him to work with the RBs this year whether he redshirts or not, then add time at LB next year so that he can play both without the confusion of having to learn both at the same time.

I seem to remember him being listed, but I can't prove that either way. Unless you have inside info I don't think we can be sure that nothing has changed, or that the plan is for him to be able to play both positions down the road. That's something the staff has done VERY rarely.

Here are some related tweets, FWIW.

Sounds like Trey Edmunds will redshirt. I like that. Gives us more options next spring.

Just because they aren't, or even are, in the 3-deep in that depth chart doesn't mean a final decision has been made. We'll know more Thurs.

Only 4 RBs listed - Holmes, Coleman, Scales and Gregory. Maybe a redshirt for Trey Edmunds then. #Hokies

I wasn't saying that he won't redshirt. Just that his status on the depth chart has not changed. The hokiesports version of the depth chart, which you linked, has never listed him because it only lists players on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd string + injuries. He was, and still is, listed on the Beamerball.com depth chart ( http://www.beamerball.com/members/depthchart-print.asp )in the "-" category (i.e. not on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team). And that was updated today. Have the coaches made any conclusions about whether they'll redshirt him coming out of the scrimmage? I have no idea. I was merely pointing out that we fans have no new information here.

As for playing both positions down the road... this is something that Beamer has talked about in interviews. E.g. True freshmen could have impact for Hokies | Richmond Times-Dispatch. There have been others with additional quotes that I can't find at the moment, painting the picture that they hope he'll turn into a LB that gets a few snaps at TB from time to time. Of course things could change.

Well I guess we'll find out soon enough. Thanks for the links.

4 quality RBs and Beamer still says Edmunds was more needed at RB? Josh Trimble (who?) as 2nd string LB and Beamer says Edmunds was more needed at RB?

Yeah because our coaches should strictly use high school tape and recruiting rankings to set our two deep :thumb:!

Let's get Acree in for Maddy. Why the hell did we let thos ebums Orion Martin and Cody Grimm on the field. Quick, get Edmunds in for Jack Tyler because he sucks, he was just a walk on.

:burt:

4 unproven RBs, only one of which could be characterized as an APB, and RB is a much easier position for a true freshman to come in and pick up than LB. At LB, Josh Trimble is 2nd string in practice, but were there another LB injury it would be Chase Williams that came in (at either mike or backer). Had the coaches known that Edwards injury would continue to string along like this they might have decided differently, but I'm not sure they would have, really. Clarke is gonna be a darn good LB and he's sitting at 3rd string. Would Edmunds be higher on the LB depth chart if that's where he was practicing?

What are you talking about? You saying he's good just because he's in the 2 deep? JGW is starting so you think he's good? The "improved" version got 9 tackles in 6 games last year. Awesome. The last time we had a great WHIP Grimm lead the team with over 100

Edmunds is just as unproven as anyone else but he needs to start developing as a LB where he's needed for the future. Taylor, Tweedy, JGW, all SRs this year

Grimm who was.....a walk on in the system for a while. You can't walk in and play linebacker. Trust me, I played that spot. My point is, what makes you think Edmunds is a sure fire player at LB. if they wanted to give him a chance to play early, it was at RB and RB only. We had zero experience there. At LB, where true freshmen rarely pay, we had experience across the two deep. Josh Trimble impressed the coaches enough to get there. The point is, the coaches made the decision based on what they saw which is a hell of a lot more than me. Guess what, WALKON Jack Tyler will be taking over at Mike next year, because he has played on the college field and proved himself. Maybe Trimble is a Grimm, Martin, Tyler type. Who the fuck knows at this point. Why does it matter where Edmunds gets his first 13 practices. he had a chance to play RB this year. he had ZERO chance of playing linebacker. Now the coaches got some tape on him and can decide where he practices while redshirting.

As far as JGW, he will platoon with RVD more than likely and he is not nearly as consistent as I would like to see, or he wasn't last year before he got hurt. However, the coaches have seen much more tape and practice than me, so they know more.

You don't develop shit in 13 summer practices. You evaluate. You develop these guys over the course of season on a scout team and practices.

They evaluated him at RB. They will make a decision now. It is not like he has been here since January.

You're acting like he just HAS to play this year. I know he wasn't going to play LB as a true freshman. That's not the point. The point is that 4 RBs should be enough for anybody and with Harris probably coming in next year and probably getting Reid this year, he is not needed at RB. So players don't get any better over 13 practices? Dang here I was thinking our coaches were pretty good at their job

By the way if he's being looked at as a RB now what makes you think they won't leave him there all year long in practice?

They wanted to see him there. The 13 practices when they are preparing for the start of the season is the best time to do that. That's it. No mystery. What if he had blown people's minds and been the best of the bunch. You lose nothing by trying in summer practice.

It means they like him at RB more than LB and they are better talent evaluators than you or me.

No it doesn't necessarily mean that. Beamer has been quoted as saying that there was more of a need at RB which is what I have an issue with. If they leave him at RB and Harris comes in next year then there will be talent wasted on the sideline, plain and simple

Holmes, Coleman, Harris, Mangus, Edmunds, Marshawn Williams, possibly Reid in this class, already have offers out for 2-3 more RBs for 2014 so I guess they want another one. If you leave Edmunds in there it gets ridiculous

I still think that they did it to see what they had in him. Once again, it was a two week try. If he blew them away, they would keep him there. If not, he didn't lose much.

I think that he is a prototypical Backer in our system, and the tandem of he and Clarke have a ton of promise. Where does DVD fit in though. Hmm. It is nice to have young depth though.
