Between the athletes own choice, his desire to get a valuable diploma, his desire to play with friends, influence of his parents, his peers, etc, thats really all I need to know about an athletes college choice.

Sounds like a pipeline to me. If your high school coach is in the bag for a school, yes, I could see it being an influence.
Also, didn't VT have more than 5 players sign in the NFL this year? Three were drafted, and several others are signed to teams, though I don't have an exact count.
