He's a meathead that can still read a 4th down bot. They Lions have a bad D and gave up 34+ points. Going for it was very obviously the right call, imo. The fundamental problem is the 49ers are just better. Detroit had the right plan, and still couldn't knock them out.

Campbell doesn't "suck," for going for it when he is supposed to... the better team just won, imo.
agree as I think I'd have gone for at least one of those and maybe more if, as I suspect, he has little faith in his kicker.

He does do some dumb things though and what stuck out more was the late run AND making it worse by using a TO when it didnt work......though I do think he owned that was a mistake.

Both 4th down tries were unnecessary and stupid, that's not hindsight, that was in the moment coaching malpractice. You lost by 3 and left 6 points on the table. Not only that the first failed 4th down gave San Fran the momentum. His choices led directly to this loss.

There's a reason why the Brady Pats and the Mahomes Chiefs have so much success, they never beat themselves. Dan Campbell's tough guy schtick cost them this game.
Maybe to be fair with Vinatieri or Gostkowski he kicks some of those?

It was a monumentally horrendous coaching performance. One of my problems with going for it instead of kicking a FG has always been what you are gaining. There is no guarantee even if you convert that you get 6 in those situations. If it is a 56 yarder and you convert and end up with a 48 yard attempt, ok. If it is from the 2 yard line and you guarantee a TD if you convert, ok. But in those situations, even if you convert on the 4th down, you aren't really better than 50% to just have another makeable FG attempt. The other thing on the early one in particular is that he had one of the most important things in sports, momentum, and all he had to do was put a 3 on the board to keep it. Lastly if you want to blame Reynolds then you are judging the decision after the fact, not beforehand. Yes it should have been caught but that wouldn't have made it a good decision. I'm sorry and I don't want to hear the media saying "Campbell always goes for it" because that isn't a defense. He should have learned from Staley that a decision can be both aggressive and reckless.
does his kicker being really bad from those distances change things? Does for me.

Thought his worse decision was the late run AND using a TO after it failed.

He also has been with the lions since 2019, and started as a quality coach… before being promoted to TE coach. Moving on is the only way up for him, but for some reason he didnt pull the trigger. It cant be just that DC and Seattle are shitholes.

Can it?
I suspect its both things. Detroit OC is a pretty good job and DC is probably more suspect than the average fan might think. Seattle maybe never in play.

Its entirely possible he just wants to win a Super Bowl and isnt thinking about self promotion.

but Staley and Campbell are nothing alike.

give me the guy who gives a rats ass what people think
Depends who "the people" are. Are we talking irrational, emotional fans who blame the coach no matter what or reporters who really just want to trip you up on something?

Pretty sure the current regime of my team does not care what fans think.....previous regime with Dorsey and Freddie Kitchens did. I'll take the now.

3 points here and there would have been much better than no points.

Facts are I'm happy to be in disagreement with you, makes my take all that much stronger.
Mass Holes can’t really talk sports outside of baseball.

Did Campbell make Gibbs fumble? That right there is more of a reason they lost than the 4th down call
and if you do want to blame Campbell for something more damning was the late run AND making it worse by using a TO.

I disagree. On both 4th downs I said he's a moron, regardless of the outcome, due to what he had to lose versus what he had to gain. Just like I said he has a moron prior to the snap a few weeks ago going for two when the extra point gets you to OT where you can regroup, re-plan, catch a breath, and hopefully win the game.

They say that football is a "game of inches" but Dan was trying to take the yards where inches were available. If he took the inches there's a far greater chance he's in the Super Bowl.
Are you aware of the stats/analytics that demonstrate that Campbell's decisions aren't "moronic"?

How do you reconcile that objective data with your feelings here?

Detroit is in a good spot.

Add some playmakers on defense and another good draft and they should be even better.
They have been drafting well. Which is everything with regard to building a team from bottom up.

The stafford trade played a big role but GM draft day picks and trades made this happen. Brad Holmes deserves Executive of the year he won.

I'd say the stats/analytics were wrong too.

The Lions lost. Both games me and millions of others called him a moron they lost.

Pretty solid data I'd say. There is no data more convincing than the data that they lost both games.

Let’s not pretend his decisions are based on analytics. Please and thank you.

Aaron Glenn also did a fine job keeping that under talented defense from being God awful.

It could be family reasons (wife/family doesn't want to move), could be that it's not about money (his contract was 'adjusted' last year). Maybe he wanted the LAC job b/c they already had the QB. Could be that he really likes being an OC and doesn't really want to be a HC all that badly.

I don't really buy the "I want to go to the SB in Detroit next year" b/c that is very unlikely just b/c of the nature of the game every year.

Considering where he is, If not HC, he has nowhere to go but down.
Unlikely, sure, but the team had gelled and they believe in themselves. The Buggs move early on was fantastic, he was a malcontent that wasnt onboard, and shows they arent putting up with those that try putting the i in team.

Serious secondary help is on the agenda. If thats solved. That defense makes moves up the defensive rankings.

This is the most retarded way of discerning the anatomy of decision making.

Congrats! It’s all played out and after the fact you’ve assessed that losing a game is less optimum than winning a game. You’re the tits my guy. I’ll let Booger McFarland know that you’re coming for him.

Before either decision is made here’s what Campbell is looking at:
This season his team was 15-20 on 4th and 3 or less going for it.
His kicker in his career is 9-20 from 48 yards and beyond.
This is their second kicker of the year and their place kicker has been an issue all season.

You’re making a hindsight decision knowing the outcome and being critical of a man who has spent countless hours watching his team and assessing his team.
