From Jeff Wilson:

Another rotation opening

Dallas Keuchel could be in the Rangers’ rotation by Saturday.

The Rangers have an opening after right-hander Spencer Howard hit the injured list Wednesday with a shoulder impingement. Keuchel, the former Cy Young winner, pitched Sunday for Triple A Round Rock and would be on five days’ rest for a potential start against Seattle at Globe Life Field.

The only Triple A starter on the 40-man roster is another left-hander, Kolby Allard, and he would also be fresh Saturday.

Another option? Right-hander Cole Winn, though he hasn’t pitched well enough to be rewarded with his MLB debut. However, he is eligible for the Rule 5 draft and needs to be protected by being added to the 40-man roster.

Would the Rangers be better served with Winn on the 40-man or Keuchel? Winn.

Would Allard, Keuchel or Winn give the Rangers a better chance to win? Very debatable.

They have all struggled at times this season — or all sesaon. Keuchel, though, has been OK in his two Round Rock starts.

That could be the deciding factor.

The other option would be a bullpen game, which might be just as effective. Lefty John King took Howard’s roster spot, so the Rangers are operating with a nine-man bullpen.
and stunk up the MLB even worse than Howard with his 12 starts

I hope they eek by for a couple weeks and then bring up Winn after a hopefully good start or 2

Not worried about roster spots. We will be fixing these anyways

the FO kinda has to be though
they are going to have to clear spots to cover our prospects that are Rule 5 eligible plus if they plan on signing some FA's. that requires a lot of thought and planning.

I would like to see Owen White get called up and make a few starts down the stretch.
It’s relatively common for players to go from AA to MLB

Ready to see Ragans pitch again. Hopefully the Astros don’t beat him up too bad.

It used to be a lot more common than it is now. For the Rangers, it has not been common at all the last couple of years. Of course, there are exceptions. It probably would be more likely for guys being given a cup of coffee than for guys coming up to stay.

It will be a big test for him. Even of he gives up 4 runs in 5 innings that is not that bad to me. In fact, if he doesn't make it out of the second inning it won't change how I feel about him. There are a lot of tough days for even the best young starters.

The front office has to make certain moves involving roster spots, but they don't have to be "worried" about it.
sure they do they have to worry that any move might come back to haunt them. now you wouldn't worry about it because you've already made up your mind

If Glenn Otto and Cole Ragans finish the year strong, how much would it change y'all's approach to free agency regarding starting pitching?

I would still want to resign Perez and acquire an additional TORP via FA or trade.
1.Perez
2.SP acquired
3.Gray
4.Dunning
5.Otto/Ragans
White, Winn,

Odds for injury/underperformance are always high on pitching. Can never have enough.
If everyone stays healthy and performs well and we end up with a logjam.. that’s awesome!
These young guys like Ragans/White/Otto/Winn could always take a spot in the bullpen and do long relief and or multi inning appearances every 3 days and get work in after they’re pulled to keep stamina kind of in the middle.. if they need to go into Rotation they could go 60 pitches then 75 then be on normal schedule by their 3rd start. Better plan than having multiple “bullpen” games when things happen.

I think some fans would be sad if anything prevented the Rangers from making a big trade for a pitcher, even if that meant Ragans and Otto were pitching very well.

Me personally, my approach has always been to wait on our young pitching before determining how much, and what quality of, pitching we need to acquire. If they want to acquire a couple of one and/or two year guys as a bridge to get to our young pitching I am fine with that, but it may not be necessary.

I am ready to go into next season with Gray, Dunning, Ragans, Otto and one short term acquisition. That is, unless White or Winn show they are ready in the next few weeks. That would almost be a miracle from Winn.
