I haven't followed the coaching search closely but I'm actually really happy with this pick. I think this team needed an offensive minded coach because our offense has been horrific for years. I'll give Fangio a lot of credit: he fielded some really credible defenses despite a lot of adversity and no help to speak of from the offense. But the W-L column was lacking and that's in larger part because the offense couldn't score. In this era of the NFL, if you have a defense routinely holding opponents to around 20 PPG and still can't win games you're doing something wrong on offense. The 2019 and 2021 defenses were doing their part. (Scoring was up against the 2020 unit but I literally do not consider anything that happened in the covid year to be worth reading too deeply into. I'm willing to treat that entire season like one long overhyped pre-season.)

So my hope is an offensive minded coach can get this team scoring again. The league wants scoring. The league is rewarding teams that field good offenses. The league has chosen to relegate defense a second class citizen of the game. The Broncos need to get on board if they want to be relevant again. Maybe Hackett can get them there.
At the very least - scoring points will be a different way to lose and therefore less boring.

As for his offensive system, Hackett referenced former Broncos star QB John Elway in describing how he'd like to beat defenses with a team that has struggled to score in recent years.

"I think the starting point is outside zone. Outside zone on offense is what you want to do and you want to base that off of play-pass," he said. "You want to make the defense cover the entire field, and you want to take shots down the field. I mean, let's all face it -- that's what the people in the stands love -- they love those bombs down the field. I remember watching John Elway throw the ball downfield to (Ed) McCaffrey on all those boot fakes. I mean, that was unbelievable. This is really where this system kind of evolved from and was created. So you're always looking for that. Then, mixing in the West Coast principle of the dropback game. That's kind of a quick summary."

I can't help but think this direction is right up Lock's alley, and what he seems to do naturally .. Maybe this ship has sailed, but I think with a staff behind him and backing him, he'd be able to excel ... or at least be a great backup to Rodgers/Wilson

I actually really love the idea of going all in on Lock for 2022. It's year 1 with this head coach so why not give him a shot to see if we actually have something in Lock before we move on. Lock looked like he could develop into something in 2019. He wasn't great in his 5 starts but he was definitely more exciting than that joke of a QB Flacco at the first half of the season.

Lock #1, and a vet #2 or even Rypien. But I prefer some vet talent in the QB room.

It does make a lot of sense. I assume Hackett and Paton discussed Lock in their many hours of palavering. Us fans will find out pretty quickly what that verdict is all about.

It truly is.

Seriously, if Lock can show some signs of life in 2022 I say get him extended and let's get under way. We have some great pieces on defense so if we can get a DC who can keep it together on that side we legitimately have a shot at a 9 or 10 win season if Hackett can develop Lock and this offense. I'm just tired of seeing the defense do its part year after year only to have the offense falter.

With our situation I would be shocked if we went into the season with the idea that Lock gets one more full year to prove he is the guy. We are set up well. I don't think this staff is going to stay patient at QB and ride Lock out for another year. It's been a minute since we have been a good football team and that heavily falls on failing at the QB position. I think this staff is pretty excited about what is around any QB that comes here on both sides of the ball. I would be very shocked if our plan is for Lock to start here next year. When you have a 5th straight losing season with a lot of young impressive talent on the team as one of the worst passing teams in the NFL I think it is pretty obvious where our focus is going to be this offseason. Paton nor Hackett have anything invested in Lock. He isn't their guy. I like Lock and want him to succeed but I think it is pretty obvious this staff isn't going into the season with the mindset Lock is going to be our guy. We aren't going to stay patient another year at the QB spot and "see" what we have.

I definitely see this argument too. And while I'd love to see Lock succeed I also wouldn't complain if the Broncos made a deal for Aaron Rodgers. Even in a very competitive AFC West, Rodgers makes this an 11-12 win team. If he played 2 seasons for the Broncos but one of them was a Super Bowl run it would be worth the price of acquiring him. I think he's got another 4 in him and if we got 4 from Rodgers that resembled the 4 we got from Manning I'd take it.

There are certaily worse ways to start as an NFL coach. ;)

Did anyone watch the press conference? I'm surprised how few comments were made about it here. I thought it was a home run.

Yeah - it was a HR - for you it was confirmation bias.

I'd like to roll the dice with Willis/Corral/Picket at #9 and let Lock be a bridge. Or somehow steal DangerRuss from Seattle for 5 years and let Lock be his back up, or trade him to get draft capital back and snag a lesser QB in the draft to develop.

For those interested in Rodgers, what are your trade terms? What do you need in terms of performance to justify the trade?

That’s a very good question. As far as players, definitely Chubb, possibly Jeudy if Adams shows any interest in following Rodgers. Obviously GB is gonna want a 1st round pick or two.

That’s about near the max I’d go for a QB that old. Chubb, Jeudy, 2 1sts and a 3rd, maybe throw in a 4th next year. Just hard to justify giving up the farm for a guy that may only be around for 2 more seasons or so.

Whatever the price - it will be more than Broncos fans want to pay, and less than Packers fans think he is worth.

I have no idea.

Teddy is a free agent, and I would be surprised if he is resigned.

At this point, it's hard to hear Rodgers' name without also hearing Davante Adams in the same sentence ... Just for the sake of discussion, let's just say the Broncos and Packers are talking about a deal - with the goal of having Rodgers and Adams land in Denver ..

I don't know what GB thinks of Jordan Love at this point.. Could a trade package include Drew Lock, or is GB steadfast on seeing what they have in Love, a guy who by all intents and purposes will be seen as the symbolic wedge that helped throw gas on the fire ...

I could see Lock being part of a package, but I am leaning towards thinking GB would rather go in a different direction

In a sign and trade with Adams, the Pack deal Rodgers and Adams to Denver in exchange for Denver's 2022 first, 2022 third, 2023 first, 2023 fourth, Jerry Jeudy and Bradley Chubb ... GB might prefer second round picks instead of or in addition to Chubb

There is some leverage here if both Rodgers and Adams want out of GB .. Rodgers could threaten retirement, Adams is a FA who could create a PR nightmare if tagged ...
