These ratings are purely for men's basketball & only for the teams that made the NCAA or NIT tournaments. One point is awarded for each team that makes it to the NCAA Sweet 16, plus one additional point for each ensuing round of advancement. Three-quarters of a point are awarded to teams that were one win shy of making the Sweet 16 if the last loss was by 6 points or fewer in regulation or 9 points or fewer in overtime. The same point value also applies to those teams that fail to advance past the Sweet 16 if they lose a similarly-close game.
One-half point is awarded to teams that make the Elite 8 of the NIT an for each win thereafter. Those teams that just missed the Elite 8 due to a close loss in their final game (6 points in regulation, 9 points in OT) will be awarded one-quarter point, as will the teams that lose close games from that point onward.
