I think it's just to limit his pitch count to keep him healthier for post season.

They've done a good job of that so far, count was down substantially from last year even before this. It was a goal going into the season after he faded last year.

Metrics my ass. If you know anything about baseball you know that comparing Chris Sale to Pedro in any way is goofy, especially Pedro's 99 season.

I'm with you. As good as Chris Sale is he is not '99-2000 Pedro Martinez. Pedro's numbers were better and most importantly the gap between Pedro and the other pitchers was much larger than it is with Sale. And of course he threw in the heart of the steroid era which makes his numbers even more impressive.

Yep, maybe they saw something that concerned them, and decided on IR, for an issue that they would not have done if the team didn't have this lead. I know he looked fine in his last outing.

Verlander is in his mid 30's, and still pitches deep into games and still pitches a lot of innings and is still extremely effective.

Chris Sale is a fucking pussy that needs to be babied despite being in his late 20's.

I thought you were only an asshole on the Politics Board. I stand corrected.

That's funny. How many Braves arms have fallen off over the last decade?

Verlander is a throwback to guys like Nolan Ryan.

Sale is typical of these fucking millenial types.

Pitchers today all all pussies with few exceptions.

Verlander, Scherzer, deGrom(even if it's just for not throwing his teammates under the bus when nobody would blame him), Kluber, etc are some of the exceptions.

Bumgarner was on the list, but he's trending towards brittle bitch territory, and I say that with him being my favorite pitcher in the game.

gosh golly!!

its not just rock after all!

Let’s compare and contrast Pedro Martinez and Chris Sale | Boston.com

The informative Twitter feed @bostonsportsinf put together a chart Thursday of how Sale’s first 50 starts stack up to other prominent Red Sox pitchers over the last 40 years. He had nine fewer wins than Pedro over that stretch, and Pedro had the lower ERA in a hitter-happy time when pretty much no one other than him had a low ERA. But Sale’s WHIP, K/9, and K/BB rates were better. He’s not Pedro. But he’s done a lot of Pedro-like things, and only legends and aspiring legends can say that.

The eye test.

I like Sale but he's not in the same breath as Pedro. No fucking way.

it's not the "eye test", Sale's ERA+ this year (219) would only be tied for the 3rd best of Pedro's career. He had an ERA+ of 243 in 1999 and 291 in 2000. The league ERA in 1999 was 4.71. It was 4.77 in 2000. It's 4.16 this year.

it's also probably not a good idea to compare strikeout rates from today's game to the late 90s/early 00s. The average K/9 in 1999-2000 was 6.5. It's 8.5 in 2018. Hell, Pedro's K/BB was significantly better (8.46 in 1999 and 8.88 in 2000 vs Sale's 6.27) and K/BB rates were a lot worse then than they are now (league average K/BB was around 1.72-1.74, it's 2.60 this year).

Sale's 2018 season could end up being one of the best ever by a Red Sox pitcher, but I'm not sure it really stacks up to Pedro's 99-00 seasons just yet.

Oh yeah, and Pedro's 1997 season wasn't too shabby either (219 ERA+, 13 complete games, 241.1 innings, 9 WAR in 31 starts)

Odd isn't it? 20 years ago a pitcher would get a sore arm and they'd immediately stick a needle in his shoulder and pump the joint with 200ML of cortisone. Over those 20 years, they found that cortisone actually masked the damage that was caused by continuing to use that arm, so they injected more. pretty soon, about half of the pitchers in baseball had retired an were working for TV networks if they could speak English. The others have just disappeared or died from the screwed up steroids they injected.

So a team decises to sit a $30M arm for a few days because they're 8-1/2 games in front of their nearest competitor and are crushing them with HOF pitchers like Brian Johnson and Nate Eovaldi.

Please. no one wants to hear about Judge or Sanchez, positional player pussies.
