Thank God my Sooners are on the upswing. I’ll be in Dallas quite a bit the next two years and will try to catch some games, but gee this shit is depressing knowing we’re not even close to being real contenders. I’m hoping we’re gonna let some guys build some value first half this season and start the rebuild process.

Teams will want to see that guys like Hamels and to some extent even Beltre still have value. Neither will bring a stellar return, both can be valuable to trade if they both show they can be valuable to other teams, and we’re still probably eating some of Hamels salary in any trade. We’re stuck with Choo unless he just goes off the first half of the season and even then I’d still expect us to have to eat a sizeable piece of his annual salary to unload him, but it would be worth it most likely, and if we could be something with some potential upside in return would be nice. Andrus is probably our most valuable trade piece but I have a hunch he’s the veteran they’ll hold onto and he’s young enough he can still be playing at a high level of the team can return to form in a couple of years.

I haven’t had much of a chance to think about Rangers baseball with the whole being a new dad thing and also working on my doctorate. I’ll be following the guys again, but not participating much. Really hoping to see Gallo and Mazara take another step forward, Calhoun to settle in, and Odor to get his shit together. Also would really like to see Profar given a shot this year. We either need to start him or trade him. Hard to believe we had the number one prospect in baseball and fucked him up. Not entirely his blame, but Washington’s final parting gift still paying dividends it seems.

I'm glad JD passed him up. Fielder and Choo taught us a lesson. Long high price contracts can easily take a bad turn and Yu with TJ history and age 31 no thanks. Kudos JD.

The future will be promising if we can develop a true ace, a true #2 and a true #3 along with a good catcher, second baseman, and center fielder. Ragans, Crouse, and Matuella might turn out to be those first three, but odds are a least one of them will fail to become one of those top 3 pitchers in the rotation. Taveras has to blossom like Brinson did. We then would have to somehow find a 2B and C in our system. We have to do all that without getting close enough to a wild card slot in the next 3 years so JD won't be tempted to trade those guys away.

Of course all of that is assuming Gallo, Mazara and Calhoun actually turn into the guys we think they can become. Then there is the whole idea of what to do at the corners when Beltre is gone. Either Guzman has to become a good choice for 1B or we have to find one of those as well.

In other words, a whole lot of things are going to have to break right. They might as well go ahead and trade Hamels and Beltre now so maybe we can get some guys in return to help us out 3 or 4 years down the line. They have already done Beltre wrong by convincing him they were going to be contenders this year. They owe it to him to trade him somewhere else so he can win a championship. He is never going to be more valuable in trade than he is right now. The same can probably be said for Hamels.

Its all about the market. If the market is good for Beltre now (and it might be) you trade him now. I think Hamels will need to prove his value a bit. He’s not a #1 but he might be a #2 if he proves it. Otherwise, he’s a #3. Question is how much of his contract we eat and what we get in return.
