Got around to Dunkirk finally. Great movie. Multiple povs and sharp editing cut the movie down to a manageable time. Felt like an extreme closeup of the human condition.

Saw Darkest Hour.

Great contrast to Dunkirk. Almost functionally works as a second act and I'm glad I saw them both in the same day. If Dunkirk was like a Pink Floyd video talking about war, Darkest Hour is an ode to Confucius, Machiavelli and the art of politics at a time of need. The acting was great but it seemed to take forever to get going. Some of the dialogue is outstanding but ultimately I'm not sure how memorable the movie will be. I strongly suspect this movie won't win any awards as its messaging might not be popular in a time of Trump.

B+. Maybe A-

Went to see All the Money in the World on Christmas. It's about billionaire JP Getty and the kidnapping of his grandson. Great acting by Christopher Plummer and Michelle Williams. Can't see Kevin Spacey in this role. He lost the part when caught with sexual harassment charges.

Really fast paced and one very gruesome scene when the grandkid gets his ear cut off. Getty is portrayed ruthlessly by Plummer as just about the cheapest man who ever lived which may be truthful. He offers to pay nothing for his grandson while the mother tries every possible option to get her son returned.

American Assassin - 2.5 out of 5 stars. Typical movie in this type of genre. Very predictable and didn't really stand out one way or the other.

"The Lives of Others"

Finally got around to watching this masterpiece. Now I know what everyone was talking about. Anyone seen this? Just an incredible film that you will still feel long after it's finished.

The Shape of Water: 4.5/5 stars. The plot was nothing special; it's thematic content has been touched upon many times throughout the years. This movie really excelled at it though. Sally Hawkins (who I'd never heard of before this movie) was great. Richard Jenkins looked like Kevin Spacey but his voice sounded like Bryan Cranston. He too was really good. And Michael Shannon is incapable of giving a bad performance, or even of just not stealing the show from everyone else.

Definitely on the lower end for me of 4.5/5 star movies, if not the lowest I have rated as such. Still, a really great movie.

Because @Balljim55 suggested I read Testimony I finished it up yesterday and then slapped The Last Waltz into my BluRay unit.

Extremely good read for those that give a shit and a phenomenal movie. 1978 and it never grows old. 4 Canucks and a redneck.

THE Band.

Hoping to see it within the next week.

Saw the Last Jedi yesterday. It was OK. Not great, though it had a few great parts. Mostly boring with a lot of annoying and boring characters on the "good guy" side.

Never go to the theatres.

I too wish to see that movie.

Completely indifferent about Star Wars though.

That's definitely worth it. I'll probably see Star Wars tomorrow night.

3 Billboards Outside Ebbing MO. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but downgraded for a couple of plot twists that rang false.. 8/10. Great performances from all of the primary characters and Frances McDormand will probably win her 2nd oscar. Plan to see Darkest Hour and The Shape of Water this weekend.

Wow, that goes deep down the Blockbuster shelves... :) Which is ironically where I bought that movie from not too long before they went out of business.

Really solid movie, very slow paced though for most people. My kid watched it as part of their SS class last year.

Well, don't leave us hanging... did he make it into the SS?

I'm sorry, I just couldn't help it. You're right though, it's not a film that's for everyone. But I think there's a good number of people these days that like that kind of slow grind.
