Wasn't JDL or BG the ones that wanted Leinart?

It's easy to say who you "would have drafted"

Wait,

Skipped over Vince Young and Leinart for Jay Cutler?

Both of those guys went ahead of Cutler.

Jay Cutler and super years didn't exist. He has always been a turnover machine. Sure he had some 20 plus touchdown seasons, but he has always had an issue forcing passes. 20-25 tds and 16-20 INT's a year isn't what I would call "SUPER" but that is just me.

In 2008 Cutler threw 18 INTs and more importantly late in the season, late in games.

and lastly....

How do you get credit for players who turns out that you didn't draft???

I didn't say HOFer. 4500 yards, best 3rd down % in the league, 25 TDs 18 INTs in just your 3rd year . Yeah I would call that SUPER and I would say CHI and a few other teams would in the spring of 2009.

Shanny wanted Cutler and had his best friend Jeff Fisher scout him so not to bring attention to Cutler as someone Denver was interested in.
I learned about this the eve of the 2006 draft from Gary Miller of Channel 4 and knew Shanny wanted to trade up for Cutler this is why in the draft contest I nailed the Cutler pick at #11. You can take that for what its worth. Just like Al Bundy's 5 TDs for Polk High.

Not saying Mike is the end all be all but in this day and age of evaluating the college QB , which is damn near impossible , and typically you have a group of QB drafted around the same slot, I would come at it as which QB do I not want. Eliminate those from the draft process.

Do you think Mike had any input in evaluating Jimmy G for his son? I would think he did. To what extent IDK.
SF liked him better than any QB they could draft I would assume.

I understand not everyone will share my view, but I give mad props to anyone now a days that can draft 1 franchise QB without a top 5 pick let alone 2 franchise QBs.

See ya

Kubiak is with Elway at the cotton bowl tonight
Now if they can get Mike Shanahan as a consultant I fee better bout drafting a QB high

From the sound of things Kubiak is joining the Front Office to work with Elway on the draft and team building. And them being at the Cotton Bowl there are a lot of players to scout but they have a top-10 grade on Sam Darnold right now. They love two QB's in this draft with Darnold being one and Mayfield being the other. They will be at both of their games over the next few days.

Personally if Darnold comes out he is the guy I would like of the top-3 with Rosen included. And that is also the direction I would go over that of getting Cousins in FA. QB on a cheap 5-year deal and them being a competent QB is the quickest and easiest way to open a big time Championship Window.

Well Tedd Sundquist would disagree with this. He would say Cutler was who he and other FO guys wanted and Leinart was Shanahan's guy and he was ticked when Leinart went because he was trying to get them to trade up to get him. And so then when they could trade up for Cutler they looked over at Mike and he wasn't happy about it but agreed to it.

Shanahan was an offensive genius, seems no matter who we drafted on offense they worked out. His problem was he couldn’t draft defense for shit, a Elway is the exact opposite. He’s amazing at drafting Defense. Sure it would be great if he was good at both but I’ll take a guy who’s good on Defense but not so good on Offense than the other way around.

My view - and simply an opinion - I consider Cutler a coach killer more than a franchise QB. Tons of natural ability totally negated by a negative Emotional Quotient.

I can understand that thought process.

Actually in points allowed , Shanny fielded several (4-5) top 10 defensive teams from 1997 on. He just couldn't win his division and get that home game.

Just from things I've heard around the league he hasn't always been well liked by teammates. He wasn't that great leader of men. Such as in Denver players were ticked when Plummer got benched as he was that leader of the locker room that lots of players looked up to.

Right now in Miami he doesn't really hang out with teammates. He goes to practice and then comes back to his hotel to hang out until practice or the game the next day.

In 2005 they finished 3rd in points allowed if I remember right. Then in 2006 they were still a top-10 unit. That was part of why Shanahan made the switch in 2006 is he thought the offense should have been doing more and blowing teams out with how good the defense was.

96,97,98, 2003,2004,2005,2006 top 10. Now maybe only top 5 really gets you anywhere but I found that stat interesting then it came to Mike and defense.

Very nice. Yeah I think things got blown out of proportion because of how bad the defense was when he left. And really I don't blame his faults on his drafts so much more so the contracts he was willing to hand out to high risk FA's that definitely did not pan out leaving the team a ton of dead money to deal with. He started turning into Al Davis in that way as a GM trying to find that one missing Championship piece.

He did and that might become Denver is they sign Cousins. Trying for that one special season. I would be OK with Cousins and if we could get Daronld for the next 10 years I like that plan better.

Well then screw Shanahan . Anyone could see USC had an fickin all star team. Throw it 5 yards and watch Bush run 60.

j/k

Fun fact: Alex Smith and Reggie Bush played HS football together in San Diego.

I would cry happy tears if this was our draft. Both dynamic players that make this Broncos offense go from laughing stock to respectable in my opinion. Still need to find a RT but this draft is a bit deeper at the Tackle position so could still find a starter in the early 3rd if this is the way we went.

I did not know the Alex Smith fun fact. Very interesting. Now I'm sure if Shanahan told the story he would say he was on board with Jay Cutler the entire time. This article I posted was Sundquist rehashing the draft and what led to them taking Cutler. So of course he is going to paint himself in the better picture. So you might be right.

Not spending $$$ on a FA QB get a real RT in FA once and for all.
