Let's not act like we're all perfect now lol. I believe the original charges took place when he was 18. We were all doing something dumb and stupid at that age.

There's dumb and stupid and then there's being a criminal. Dude should have stuck with dumb and stupid.

The fact that he's been on probation for 10 years is ridiculous. I never heard of anyone else being on probation for 10 years.

Really?!? I have. Plus, when you violate probation, your probation often gets extended. Kind of like how when you're in prison and commit a crime, you get more time.

2-4 years is just insane. You got people killing others on video in broad day light in this country who doesn't serve jail time so yeah I'm without question against Meek serving 2-4 years for violating his probation

He knew the terms of his probation and he violated those terms. It really is that simple. It doesn't matter if you, I, or anyone else agrees with his sentence. He knew the terms, he knew the potential punishment for violating those terms and he chose to do it anyway.

Not only is he a criminal, he's a criminal who's too stupid to follow the terms of his probation.

And once again if Harden choose to wear a sneaker saying "free Meek" who happens to be a good friend of his because he disagrees with the length of the sentence then there isn't damn thing the NBA can do about it as he is following their sneaker policy.

It also would not be a good idea to even touch this topic if I'm the league as 75% are black and that likely wouldn't go over well

And once again, just because something isn't against a policy doesn't make it right or particularly smart.

Again: fair enough here. For the record though, I don't think asking someone not to violate parole repeatedly is akin to "demanding perfection."

Reading the wikipedia on this guy, it appears the original probation length was not 10 years... rather, the parole was extended as a repercussion of the first parole violation or two.

Well, yeah... it's a free country... and if he isn't violating NBA policy... I also have no problem with his freedom to do what he wants.

This isn't an situation like Aaron Hernandez when one of the Pouncey brothers (if not both) were saying free Hernandez who was obviously a killer. Harden is saying free Meek because he is back in jail basically for riding a dirt bike in NYC lol
I don't follow you on the dirt bike thing... original charges involve drug dealing and a gun. That's not murder, but it's not nothing either.

That's the way the system works. Parole is actually pretty sweet (compared to jail) as long as you follow the rules... and the rules are clear.

And dude got not 1, not 2, not 3 but FOUR chances. I'm honestly surprised that anyone would be surprised at him finally getting his arse nailed to the wall. Sounds like he was cut breaks time and time again.

It's interesting the stark divide here... some folks see this as an instance of the system being too harsh, others see it as an instance of lenience, if anything.

My wife... who I've spoken of before... just got off parole for drug/addiction stuff and some of the crap she did related to that (phony prescriptions). She violated once during that time (failed a drug test) and she was in jail for 2 months, no questions asked. That is after one violation. We don't have money or a fancy lawyer... so that's that. (I'm not complaining, either... she definitely violated)

The dirt bike incident was one of the incidents this year that put him back in jail even though charges were dropped.

Anyway, I get that if you take one part of the guys story... such as whatever this dirt bike incident is... and jail time may seem excessive.

But you look at the totality of things, and the jail time should make a lot more sense... even if you ultimately might disagree. Yet you use words like "insane" and give a few incredulous laughs and what-not... I don't get that.

At some point, indulging every excuse isn't merciful or good for anybody:
  • You can look at the initial crime (drug dealing, gun)... and say he was just 18. Fair enough. The court seemed to agree with you, and gave him parole instead of hard time.
  • You can look at the first or second parole violation and say they were small fry... which it looks like they were. The court, again, seemed to agree with you and held off on the hard time.
  • Once we start getting to violation 3 and 4... what the heck do you want the system to do? Just keep letting him off the hook? Extend his parole to 15 or 20 years?... (but honestly, why would that matter if they are never going to come down hard on him anyway)
How many chances should this guy get? 6? 8? You tell us, bks.

I deal with teenagers up to 18 all day long. Some of them will use up every chance you give them... until the real consequences come, they'll act as if the consequences don't exist. It was that way for my wife, too...

I did plenty of stupid shit when I was 18-19 years old. Even did a couple of things that could have got me killed or seriously hurt.

But nothing that could land me in jail.

Turns out there's plenty of stupid shit you can do at that age that won't get you arrested. I don't think I did all of them, but it wasn't for lack of trying. lol

Just because he isn't violating a policy, doesn't make it the right thing to do.

Huffing paint might not be against the law but it's still not something someone should do.

You never bought beer with a fake ID? Never drove with BAC over .08? Never sold your buddy a dime bag?

Nope. Never knew where to get a fake ID. Always had a designated driver (Dad was a cop, so it was beaten into my head lol), never smoked weed until my late 20's.

I tended towards things like surfing The Wedge in Newport Beach when I was barely even a novice, skiing the expert hill at Big Bear even though I'd never even worn a pair of skis before that day (never skied again, either lol) and catching rattlesnakes with a couple of football forearm pads and my hands.

Ya know, truly stupid shit. lol

Nah, this thread is kind of about a repeat offender bitching about the consequences, right?

Meek Mill doesn't seem like your cup of tea so I doubt you know much (if anything) about his situation

His sentence is way too harsh .
He's a repeat offender who believes he is above the law and that the rules of his probation don't apply to him.
