It has been a very long time since we had a really good traditional free agent signing though. We have had a few good one year deals and a very good non-traditional free agent signing with Yu, but nothing really good for an traditional longterm deal.

if you listen to the latest rumors it seems that it is going to be another off-season of tier 3 or 4 signings and another season like last year

Hmmmm, I don't totally discount Elvis opting out. Would hate to see it. But you see it happen all the time. "Player likes where he's at, team loves having him, but the player wants to a chance to win it all, and get the big bucks in the process."

my answer is NO!!! i would rather look at trading Odor plus to Miami for Yelich & Gordon and then trade Profar for pitching

if we continue to waste money and 1 year contracts on tier 3 & 4 level talent(and i use that term lightly) it will take a lot more than a couple of years.

he can see just like Beltre that this team plan has years and years written all over it as far as the team being competitive. why wouldn't he opt out? a team that plans on competing will offer him big bucks

I think they have Beltre convinced for now that they are competitive enough to win a wild card or he would have asked to be traded.

Well, I think the idea is that they are working towards improving the team for next year enough to compete for a WC.

they have told him they would be competitive, if their aim is only to be competitive enough to have a shot at a wild card slot then they are limiting their options. there are 7 to 9 teams(Houston, Cleveland, New York, Boston, Seattle, Minnesota, Los Angeles, etc) in the AL that are better than the Rangers right now and they are all planning to do whatever it takes to get better. they are looking to add quality tier 1 and 2 players to their rosters while we hear the Rangers are looking to bring in cheap tier level 3 & 4 players on 1 or at best 2 year deals. Jimenez, Chatwood, even Cashner are nothing but arms to temporary fill slots until next offseason when we will sign more temporary roster fills. when will we see some moves that are designed to rebuild the team over the long term?

Longterm rebuilds usually consist of trading away veterans who won't be here a couple of years down the road for young prospects who will. In the Rangers case that would involve trading Beltre and Hamels. Do you want them to go that route?
