That may be the letter Sansa was coerced into writing by the Lannisters after Ned tried to proclaim that Joffrey was not the rightful heir and Stannis was.

I only caught "killed by his wounds" upon first viewing.

I wouldn't be shocked either way but I'm leaning towards him dying a noble death north of The Wall.
