When I first sawthis on my phone in small print I automatically thought it said we Cardinals pitcher Martinez. I went, "Wow!!!". Then cleared my eyes and reread it and it said Gonzales and I immediately said, "Who?". I give this one an 'F' right now. Not sure if he is long term help with all his injuries, but don't see him as immediate help at all. We could have gotten a pen arm for much less and he isn't in position to pitch the rest of the season in the starting rotation. I just don't get this at all. SMFH!

Wow, I think Jerry was heavily on the bottle last night.

I would normally laugh at this, but it is just so sad to think about.

ON THE HORIZON

Marco Gonzales, LHP, Short-Season A State College | Ceiling/Realistic Role: 50/45

Ht/Wt: 6’1”/195 B/T: L/L Age (as of December 1st 2016): 24y 10m
Player Stats

Quick Hit: At his best, Gonzales can wield a double-plus changeup to go with an average fastball that plays up due to multiple looks (two-seam, four-seam and cut action), an average curveball, and plus command. His last two seasons, however, have been marred by injury – first shoulder issues in 2015, and then a 2016 lost to Tommy John surgery. The former Gonzaga star hopes to return in 2017 fully healthy and ready to reestablish himself as a key component of the Cardinals staff. In order to do so, he’ll need to throw with more confidence and consistency at the major league level, as his first 37 innings (almost all thrown in 2014) were peppered with lapses in control and very loose in-zone command, leaving him far too hittable. His fly ball tendencies may always limit the upside, but at minimum, a healthy Gonzales should be able to provide quality back-end production. Once he’s healthy and logging innings again, evaluators will have a better feel for whether that potential mid-rotation stuff is still kicking around in the southpaw’s left arm.

--------------------------

JD seems to like Gonzaga pitchers for some reason. Still in shock at this lame trade.

Yeah...

His ceiling is lower than O'Neill's and his floor is lower as well.

He doesn't have very high upside. He's overall a very average pitcher. A guy who if we are fortunate can carve out a role as a #3 or #4.

Yes but Johns the M's mouthpiece contends we traded from a position of strength so all is good again...dumbass!!! Just because you have strength at a position doesn't mean you give it away. The guy is 25, unproven in the majors, and has a Greg Oden of baseball injury history. If you thought last nights game pissed me off, this tops it ten times over. And they send him to Tacoma which really makes sense.

Honestly, I would've preferred the Mariners swap O'Neill for a prospect of O'Neill's caliber at SP.

I'm really, really, really hoping I'm wrong, but this trade looks fucking terrible. I'm hoping that at the end of the season someone digs up this post and makes me look stupid and that it worked out great, but man... this trade really doesn't make sense.

Gonzales is just an overall average pitcher with a plus changeup and plus command. Nothing special. O'Neill is a guy who I could see as a future All-Star.

Dipoto has done this kind of thing before. He undervalues his own guys. In the past few days he has traded 5 prospects 4 of which in the top 30 of the organization and 2 of them in the top 10. All for what, a bullpen arm and a fringy lefty starter. He pays high prices.

I just can't understand this trade. This trade is an off-season type deal, I still would've been bugged because I think O'Neill is going to be a stud and the type of outfielder they need but this literally does nothing to help them reach the playoffs.

So this off-season and next year's deadline they will still be in the market for a top end of the rotation starter with less to work with as Lewis has now become the unquestioned untouchable prospect. I just can't see one positive of this at this time of the year.

Which is another head scratcher. He has preached since he took over how thin the farm system is, so makes it more thin without getting a difference maker? He essentially got Nick Vincent and Danny Hultzen in these two deals.

Exactly, when you trade 5 good to decent prospects and really only net a middle reliever to help for this season its a mismanaged trade deadline. The trades he has made have not made this team a contender, it is just not significant enough to turn this team into a competitive playoff team.

Maybe I'm wrong here but pitching is way overvalued right now. Seattle is basically throwing up a hail mary

It's like lining your punter up to throw the Hail Mary then.

I think he just undervalues Jack Z's guys.

All things considered, the main thing that worries me is he just came off of TJ surgery. At one point this kid was St. Louis' #1 prospect just a few years ago, that tells me he has the physical talent. Then consider the gems that JeDi has been able to uncover in Gamel, Haniger, and to a lesser extent Miranda. All three were either under the radar or head scratchers when we acquired them, and to me this falls into that category when considering the power that O'Neill posses. I wish it was someone that is able to be plugged into the rotation in the next five days, but JeDi has earned a little bit of wait and see when evaluating the trade itself.

I think the problem with JD and his evaluating of pitching is that he must compare them to him...and that is not a good thing.

Here are the SP's Dipoto has acquired via trade.

1- Marco Gonzales
2- Chase De Jong
3- Drew Smyly
4- Yovani Gallardo
5- Chris Heston
6- Rob Whalen
7- Max Povse
8- Zac Curtis
9- Ariel Miranda
10- Zach Lee

Talk about blue-light specials. Every one was on the down slide before getting them.

I usually agree with you, but I can't on this one.

1- Gamel has played well for 73 games but also has dropped .28 points in average in the last 3 weeks or so.
2- Haniger has played 50 games and has dropped .80 points in average since returning.
3- Miranda is a solid #4, decent #3.

So I think it is way too early to anoint Haniger and Gamel as gems after less than half a season for each. Ackley hit at one time as well remember. I think the Miranda deal was his best work considering what Miranda has provided plus losing Wiley's noodle arm and huge contract. Just my opinion of course and I respect yours as well.
