The Detroit Red Wings have been looking to acquire a top-tier defenseman since Nicklas Lidstrom retired and the search remains ongoing for GM Ken Holland.
According to the Ottawa Sun, the Red Wings have shown interest in Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler.
Edler, 27, had been shopped in the off-season, prior to July 1, when his six-year, $30 million contract kicked in -- his deal includes a no-trade clause.

Had the Canucks moved Edler before his long-term deal came into affect, they wouldn't have needed his permission. Now, if Vancouver GM Mike Gillis wants to move him, Edler will have to sign off on the deal.
The Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes showed interest in Edler back in June, and it appears Detroit is still knocking on Gillis' door.
Though the Sun claims Edler isn't likely to be moved, a league source told TFP the Canucks would be willing to pull the trigger on a trade if the right package were to be presented -- upon which they would approach Edler about the opportunity. The NHL is currently in a roster freeze, which is lifted at 12:01 am, Dec. 28
