Why isn't this interference?

For starters, this play had no real impact on the outcome of the game.

How is this not interference, and therefore a DP?

I heard someone last night make the comment that the call could not be reviewed/reversed because the interference in the case with Matt Holiday was a 'subjective call' and thus cannot be reviewed.

I sure as shit would be protesting the call as well with Farrell, that's all I got to say.

I watched it live with the wife lastnight and we just looked at each other having played baseball and softball, respectively, in our early years. That's fing interference from little league on up, all day long. What was really weird is how long it took them to decide. They took forever to make a ruling, then after making the ruling took even more time to go look at it again. Couldn't decide the meaning of the rule, and these slobs are Professional Umpires.

I haven't heard that one, but even if that is so, it was so blatant that there is no way they should have fd up the call to begin with.

At first I thought maybe it was caught on a line, but sure enough, it was a 1-hopper. After realizing this, Matt Holliday pretty much broke my brain trying to comprehend what he was doing. I think it's kind of hilarious the umps were so dumbfounded they didn't realize it was obvious interference in any case.

My other big beef was the time it took. WTF?

And they wonder why games run long.

There was really nothing subjective about the call. Holliday obviously prevented the double play from being completed. Also, he was out as soon as the Bosox player caught the ball and touched second base. If so, Holliday needs to leave the field of play.

Generally when someone is dumbfounded, it takes a while to comprehend exactly what happened since it's so far out of the norm. Nobody expects The Spanish Inquisition the baserunner to run and slide back to 1st after being forced out in a routine DP. It's so stupid it's confusing.

My only guesses are

A) Glitch in the rules prevents the ump from overturning it. In which case, we're gonna need an in-season rule tweak
B) Brainfart

I didn't watch the game so maybe I missed this, but how does this not merit an ejection of Holliday?

That was never mentioned during the game. AJ Pierjynski was announcing the game and he said that maybe Holliday forgot that we has out as soon as the Bosox player touched second, and thought the could get back to first. But even with that reasoning, it still shows that Holliday had a classic brainfart. Still unbelievable that the umpires didn't call him out. There was a five minute delay as the call was reviewed back on MLB headquarters in NYC.

In the Yankee/Red Sox rivalry I am on the Yankees side. With that bias in mind ... it was interference by the Yankee who had a brain fart (thought the ball was a soft liner) ... the result should have been a double play.

Was Sam Holbrook the first base umpire?

It was actually an easy call (umpires sometimes miss it - that's being human) but the replay should have been easy. Matt Holiday had his head up his ass and should be held responsible.

exactly the runner who interfers is out according to the rules but he was already out and i disagree matt had a brain fart if he thought it was a line drive he has to go back to 1st:suds:

I agree that it is 100% not reviewable, and that was handled correctly.

However, Gardner was out, no longer a runner and he directly interfered with the throw. It's a clear interference call.

Holiday thought Moreland had converted the force at first already, and that the play at second was a tag play. Which would have made first base open to return to.

It wasn't really a brain fart. In fact, it was a heads up play if Moreland had taken the out at first beforehand. Which Moreland should have, given the speed of the runner going to first was much better than his. Get the speedier runner first, and still have time to get Holliday.

Yeah I agree, Holiday was out (forced) at second and it's a dead play at second base. It should have been an interference call on Holiday.
