Why is it an unearned run if the pitcher makes the error?

This one has always perplexed me. The entire point of an unearned run is that it was something out of the pitchers control that led to the run scoring. When the pitcher himself makes the error that leads to the run/runs scoring then shouldnt it be an earned run??

Because as soon as the ball leaves the pitcher's hand, he becomes a fielder.

Honestly, that's it.

The pitcher throws the ball, it's batted, but there's a chance that the runner is

a) Thrown out
or
b) there is an error made by a fielder.

That fielder could be anyone from positions 1 through 9, but the error is a fielding one, not a pitching one.

@Huwaryu_in_exile has this right. You also have to consider the RBI situation. Would players now get RBIs on errors by pitchers if changed those runs to earned runs? It just turns into a giant mess if we start changing the rules for pitcher errors in the field.
