they made 7 three pointers in the first half vs Minnesota but only have 38 points at half time. I think the new AD at Illinois should have shit canned Groce also.....Illinois basketball used to be so fun to watch, but not so much the past 4 years. A program like Illinois should be in the tourney every year.

Poor recruiting.

Another thing is that basketball is national now. It used to be NYC and Chicago were hotbeds of hoops and that if you were a university by there, you'd land local talent just by being in the area.

No longer the case, though Chicago has had some really good ones recently and Illinois has gotten none of them.

When Illinois was good they had Chicago and even Peoria players. There are some very good Peoria area player that Illinois never got. Alec Peters from Valpo...Max Biefeld(spelling) for now Indiana the 6th man of the year in the B1G...

Why would a superstar recruit with any potential school choose to go to Champaign? It's a crappy city with nothing to do. The school is populated by wealthy suburban frat boys...not exactly the type of people that most inner-city Chicagoans relate to. And the fan base is a bunch of Central Illinoisans who hate Chicago and any mention of it. Assembly Hall...eh, the State Farm Center...was outdated before these recent renovations.

And the team itself has been worse than most of the somewhat close schools: Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, Kentucky, Marquette are all there. Then you got Duke and Kansas swooping in. Why pick Illinois when you got all those schools..

If Illinois wants to win, they need to find a way to be Chicago's team. Right now, they are pretty far from that. And frankly, I think DePaul is more likely to take that mantle when they move to the South Side than Illinois is.

depaul has to have the dumbest ad in the country. Hiring a firm and paying 300,000 dollars for a service to have you hire a coach you already hired yrs ago:doh:

Illinois used to have a lot more cachet. They used to play the HS championship game there and they used to get Mr. Basketball quite often.

They're definitely in a lull. DePaul has been on an even worse decline over the past 20 years.

Not quite as bad as NYC, but college hoops in Chicago is bad.

Like Lawrence, Durham, and Storrs are paradise? :dhd:

In particular, I can't imagine a less exciting place than Storrs, and Calhoun used to get stud recruit after stud recruit to go there.

Actually, that program is not good right now, so why should they be in the tourney every year?
