When Will Enough Be Enough?

30 years? 40 years? 50 years? 100 years?

When will the consistent and mind-numbing losing be enough for a change? How big of a sample size do you need before realizing that the current way of running an NFL team just doesn't produce results. How long does this miserable display have to continue before an actual front office structure is put in place with a general manager, respectable scouting department, and smart football people making football decisions.

Sunday night's hollowing 24-17 loss to the Steelers was just another example in a long line of defeats to the big boys in the AFC North. Despite all of the Steelers injuries and issues on the road this season - if you thought the Bengals were actually winning this game - you are a moron. We have just seen the movie script too many times. An outmatched Jay Gruden combined with a shocking lack of discipline on defense allowed a 21-3 run by Pittsburgh, on the road.

Halfway decent teams don't lose games when they are up 14-3 at home on Sunday night. Period.

After a 3-1 start, the Bengals are now 3-4 going into a stretch with two more home games against Peyton Manning (noodle arm or not he's going to obillerate our secondary) and Eli Manning (Victor Cruz might rack up 300 yards receiving). So now you are staring down the barrel of 3-6 before a 'breather' of sorts against KC and Oakland before a downright brutal December schedule.

The Bengals will finish 6-10 or 7-9, because that's just what they do, but it will still go down as one of the most disappointing seasons in team history.

Worst of all - a completely robotic Marvin Lewis has lost all will to live - which was clearly evident following yesterday's post-game press conference. In previous years, I'd argue he would just quit. Now? I think he understands there is nowhere else for him to go. He knows he won't get fired - not with two more years on his contract. He'll coach the remainder of his contract, collect millions, and then move on to the next opportunity.

Is he a good coach? Hell if I know. Bill Belichick, Bill Parcells or Vince Lombardi himself wouldn't have succeeded here under this ownership. If he gets another opportunity somewhere, it will be fascinating to see the results.

The culture inside PBS is beyond bad, it's a toxic waste dump. Absolutely nothing will turn this team around until the front office changes - and night's like last night drive that point home with a sledgehammer.

When the topic arises, Marvin preaches all the time that no one in the building wants to win more than Mike Brown. Based on the results since January 1991, what a horrifying prospect.

You guys are just bad fans. We all know that once Jones and Sanu become the pro-bowlers that everyone expects and Dre gets healthy we'll be right back at the top of the AFC-N race. We have the best drafts and have now turned the corner now that Marvin Lewis makes all personnel decisions. I love being a fan of this powerhouse.

wait...I thought Baby Hank was Victor Cruz 2.0??? Sanu and Binns are legit #2 guys??

The really shitty part about this year, is that we'll end up going 7-9 or something, and not even get that good of a draft pick out of the season. Assuming our first round pick actually plays in 2013-14, or is even still on the team in 2017

who the f*** is "Baby Hank"? lol, baby Hawk! he needs to get the ball more. but we're either too stupid, or the defenses have keyed in on him.

Sanu is good, but you know the Bengals. no one said Binns was legit #2 except a few homers around here.

The Bengals need to "KNOW THEIR ROLL"
They are supposed to be the bitches of the NFL, just as the Washington Generals are the bitches of the Harlem Globe Trotters. Its what we do, its how we roll, its what our team was designed to be. Any Bengal that scores a touchdown from now on needs to be punished with electroshock therapy. They are no longer allowed to build our hopes up with this "talent" bull shit. I've had enough.

I completely disagree about his assessment of Mike Brown. I think Brown has put a decent team together despite all the injuries. However, Marvin doesn't know how to put a good game plan together and he doesn't know how to motivate players to go 100% for him. Guys play like they are trying not to lose a game instead of playing to win it. That is all Marvin Lewis, that has nothing to do with Mike Brown.

Marvin Lewis needs to go. Just hire Gruden as our HC already, and see what happens, it couldn't get any worse could it?

yea, but when Marvin Lewis is the best coach this team has had since Sam Wyche something is wrong at the top.

Dave Shula - why?
Coslet - really not that good of a HC, he did ok as an OC I think.
LeBeau - If I was going to make excuses for someone, he'd be it. but I remember being pretty frustrated with him.

You shouldn't make an excuse for him. You were frustrated because LeBeau went 12-33 as a head coach...which is actually .001 worse than Dave Shula at 19-52

None of those guys had half of what Marvin has had to work with.

Something is wrong at the top, but Marvin isn't any good either.

yea, but he's guaranteed a place at the hall of fame when he finally retires. not so with Coslet and Dave Shula. he's widely respected, unlike the other two.

It's time to stop being Pittsburgh's bitch.....I don't see the mechanism in place to effect that change......It needs to be completely torn down and rebuilt, from the top on down.....someone needs to buy Mikey out, and fire Marvin(now 5-14 against the Steelers)....and that's only the beginning....all the other needed changes have been documented at one time or another on this board........As an Alabama fan, I can say unequivocally if a coach couldn't beat Auburn, he wouldn't have accumulated anywhere near a 5-14 record before being shown the door.......

Mike doesn't like being in a small market and being now forced to spend money. something will happen in the next few years, more than likely he'll move the team in the dead of night.

He can't. His contract with the city does not permit him too especially since the city is upholding their end of the stadium agreement. Pretty one sided, but they are upholding theirs, and if they don't, I am sure Brown could file a case against them as the city agreed to do this crap for 30 years when they signed the original agreement.

I don't disagree that Marvin sucks. He does. It's been proven.

But I do disagree that this team has been assembled well. This was a team that was built without linebackers, without safeties, and without a proven 2nd receiver. We also put all of our stock on a running back that was primarily used in a deep rotation in the past. How is that a well-constructed team?

I'll concede that injuries to the corners have hurt the pass defense and injuries in the interior line have caused issues there..... But there were some glaring needs that weren't addressed and those needs are showing up on gameday.

BTW -- The injury situation in Pittsburgh and Baltimore is SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the injury situation here..... I don't expect it to hold either club back though - They're built to deal with such situations. We're built to make excuses.

yea, depth on the roster is something the Bengals don't really prepare for.

Its strange, its as if they expect that, in one of the most physical sports on the planet, their just won't be that many injuries.

Howard was the man before he got hurt. Maualuga sucks. Lawson was good last year, along with Burfict and Skuta, etc. Not world beaters at LB, but not that bad outside Maualuga. I think the LB situation is magnified a little too much because of Maualuga being as bad as he is, and the injury to Howard.

We have had as many as 7 DB's injured through training camp and the beginning of the season, and outside Nelson who is maybe a tad bit above average at best, our second safety is horrible.

DL is awesome. This is basically the same team as last year that had the #7 ranked defense in the NFL. You wouldn't think "much tweaking" needed done. Our secondary has hurt us a ton, and I personally think the huge presence of Pat Sims has been missed badly in the run game.

Offensively, our run game is way worse than it was last year with Benson, and with Cook getting injured and having two first year guards basically is not helping that situation.

Schedule and injuries have been hurting us a lot this year. The Steelers are a much better team than 3-3 also, but because of injuries, they have been god aweful for the most part too. Let's see how the Ravens respond after their ass kicking once they lost Webb and Lewis. Injuries play a huge role in how a team performs throughout the year. Dalton's run game is so poor, that he is struggling. There is no play action available because they only have to put 6 in the box to stop our run which is pathetic.

I think the team is decent (not great mind you, but decent). However, injuries and Lewis have really hurt this team this year. He does not have them prepared like they need to be to step in for injured players, our schedule is about to get brutal.

Until we find that star RB to help Dalton, and get some experience under our young line, we will struggle. I am already having to say, there is always next year cause this team is toast unless they get their head out of their collective asses quickly.
