Tulo is always hurt. The face of baseball isn't someone who is always hurt with no major milestones to hang his hat on.

As I said earlier, Trout is the face and it isn't close. Derek Jeter was someone that even grandmas who don't watch baseball would recognize, trout is easily the closest to that...already.

I was just saying the same thing to my wife. Trout is a class act and an easy guy to like, whether you're an Angel fan or not. Same with Jeter.

Harper and Puig? Both guys irritate the crap out of me. (Of course, if they played for The Giants, I'd probably love them) ;)

Harper is in that category of guy who's AB you will refuse to miss. Kemp up? I'm grabbing a beer. Harper? Gotta watch.

I am so myopic that I never saw Jeter as the face of baseball...I always saw a Cardinal player as that person...like Yadi the last few years. I don't think there is a face of baseball in my eyes other than the best player on my team...

Trout and Puig for better or worse
Puig has shown he can play the game at a high level, the test for him is can he go two consecutive months without running afoul of either the team or the law...Trout seems to be the popular choice..if the Sox could one position him, i think Brock Holt could become a known quantity(at least throughout the AL)..

Brock Holt regressed badly in the 2nd half.

1st half: .327/.371/.463, .395 BABIP in 279 PA
2nd half: .219/.278/.271, .283 BABIP in 213 PA

I do think Holt's a better hitter than he was in the 2nd half, but it's probably much closer to reality than his 1st half was. He should still be a nice utility player for the Sox, but that's about it. I don't think he has any shot at becoming a star. A fan favorite like Trot Nixon? Maybe.

Good Morning Nava, i do agree he tailed off, but did that regression take place before the concussion??

Yes. The Holt/Pedroia collision happened on August 25.

No, just myopic. The Yankees havent' been relevant for how many years??? And it may be hard to comprehend, but west of the Mississippi, Jeter means squat

Wrong...Jeter was/is the face of the sport. Like the guy above said, he was the player even your grandma knew who he was.

Deserved or not (I think it was deserved), those are the facts. The Yankees are always 'relevant', at least to the media. Again, deserved or not.

Is MLB a sport that needs a single face?

We had a discussion yesterday (don't remember if it was on this board or the Giants board) about TV ratings in baseball, and how it is HUGE locally, but nationally it is horrible. Maybe Scouty's concept is the answer to the question. Each team/region will have a face rather than a single player being the national face of the league (Molina in St Louis; Puig/Trout/Kershaw in LA; King in Seattle; etc).

Sure, and maybe Jeter was the last nationally known big time star of the sport...that's why I'm asking. You could be right, with him gone it's finally just a regional thing, although still a very successful thing on those terms.

Non sports fans know who LeBron James is. Non sports fans know who Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are. I don't think any non sports fans know any of the current MLB players, Jeter may have been the last. :noidea:
