BengalDoug, what was Whits PFF grade at LT?

I think Collins was at +14, if I remember correctly...and Whit was in the 30's? But I don't remember if that was bot LT and guard, or just LT, etc...

10 starts at LT +20.2
7 starts at LG +20.3

He's hardly washed up at tackle, but he may be even better at guard, and the line as a whole is better with him at guard, because Collins is that much better at tackle than Boling/Pollack is at guard. Whit's a star at either position.

Besides, Andy Dalton has two blind sides......

Whitworth is still a very good player.

The problem is that he turns 33 this year, and we're about to let a player 4 years younger who didn't give up a sack in 7 starts at LT walk away in FA.

To be fair, AC is not a great run blocker, but our best line has Whit at guard and AC at LT. Once again though, Brown is never going to pay two guys LT money. I'm afraid Collins is gone too........

I totally agree with you. He's hardly washed up, which is what I was pointing out.

Yes, the line would be much better sliding Whit to guard and Collins at Tackle. Not because Collins is better than whit at Tackle, but because of exactly what you said, Whit at guard is > than anyone else, and while there is a drop off at LT, you still get solid, positive, plays at LT with Collins.

For a LT in today's NFL it's 90 percent about pass blocking ability.

If he walks in FA and he's anywhere close to as good as he seemed to be down the strecth they'll regret it soon

Oh, I'm sure we will regret it. We got a little worse on both lines losing two impact players. But releasing
Whit would be beyond crazy. He has three good years left, at least.......If it were up to me I would find a way to pony up the cash for AC and MJ.

You can always find exceptions, but LT generally isn't a position where players are still having quality seasons on their 36th birthday.

I'd be surprised if his play doesn't take sharp decline soon.

I'd rather role the dice on Collins. He's 4 yrs younger and has no wear and tear on his body

I would approach Whit about an extention, with some good bonus money to move to guard. He'll be taking a pay-cut, but he'll prolong his career moving to guard, and play at a high level there for several years more than he would at LT.

You then sign Collins to be your LT for the next 4 years, or whatever, and you've improved your line drastically. I know they just signed what's-his-name to a 3 year deal at guard, but quality depth is always a great thing to have along the DL and OL, as the Bengals well know after last year.

I watched almost ZERO college ball this last year and have done even less research on players. I am out of the loop this year.

the Bengals are creating their own draft needs.

but if they draft a LT, won't he be getting a LT contract?

You were saying the exact same ish last year, and Whit proved to be fine. He's been our best lineman for years and I think there is a good chance he is even better this year as he wont' be coming off a botched knee surgery.

That said, I think we're gearing up to take an offensivle lineman in the first round. If a tackle drops to us, I suspect he'll either play right away or be groomed to take over in 2015.

I guess we're really hoping that Hall comes back 100% healthy then.

or draft a first round CB this year and a O-tackle next year.

there has to be a mediocre lack luster person we can sign at guard this year.

We'll probably re-sign Brandon Ghee.

We keep our own*

*Unless they're really expensive, have better options or are in a contract year.

Doubtful that the Bengals draft a LT in round 1. Most likely they will go CB or even DE if someone falls...

All this wailing and gnashing of teeth...hilarious.

saying that we draft a left tackle isn't gnashing teeth, it's preparing for 2015 more so than 2014. The OL is still average to above average "as is" but Whitworth won't last forever. It's common since.

Zach Martin might be our guy there.

...

Leon Hall is 29, and Kirkpatrick could improve. we need to plan on another and depth, we can't afford to be thin at CB

...

It really just depends on what player ISN'T drafted before us, there are 5 positions we could use a GOOD player S,DE,DT,OT,CB, depending on the top player available when we pick. That player may be Zach Martin, or it could be Gilbert, or someone else.

Wasn't meaning you, just in general for Bengaldom...the OL was ranaked as one of the top 3 OL's before Collins moved into LT, and remained one of the top OL's afterwards. This line, with or without him, is well above average. This is a great year to work on building up that depth. Whitworth won't last forever, and eventually he will slide. Hopefully, the Bengals can continue doing exactly what they've done in the past 4+ years and find quality guys in the draft that will be ready to step up when called on.

Agreed with CB. I think you have to look CB, and with th depth early on, a really good CB could fall to the Bengals' spot in the 1st round. The line is deep with linemen as well, so 2nd, and 3rd rounds can be a good place to find a backup guard and/or a Center. Not sure how great the depth is at T in this draft, I've not really seen much.
