I think its a smart move. He's a leader and their best lineman. They can't give him a long extension because of his age, so this could be a yearly thing. The line would be screwed next year without he and Andre and the two rookies being thrown in there. Gives them a little more time to be ready.
I hope this doesn't mean that Zeitler is gone, I hope it means its Fisher vs. Ogbuehi for RT next year, and they can focus on finding DL and LB's in the draft

Is Zeitler going to be worth a lot on the open market? He's talented and he's young, but he's a guard and he's not an all-pro.

Good move with Whit. He's the oldest tackle in football. It would have been irresponsible to let him go, but it would have been crazy to give him a 3 year deal.

It will be interesting to see what he does..... I can see him retiring after next season. He'll be over 35 and he doesn't strike me as the type of dude that could handle guys beating him when his skills decline.

With any other (non-QB) player of Whitworth's age I'd generally prefer to let them play out the season and then see how their body held up. But Whiyworth has been such a pro's pro and the best Bengals of the ML era so I don't mind the team giving him added security another player might not get in the same situation. On a negative note I hope this isn't an indictment on either of the top 2 draft pick's progress

I would think it's probably too early to tell with them. Particularly since Whit's replacement hasn't even put on the pads yet. Maybe they're treating the line like they have treated the secondary - A long transition plan.

That's a good point. I figured he was just inactive. His knee injury was in his bowl game so he seems to be getting a true redshirt season. I guess the plan is for Ogbuehi and Fisher to compete to start at RT next season and then both start in 17. It wastes the cost effective years of your early draft picks but OT is an important enough spot that they'll be happy with the picks if they end up as average starters

Solid move. Worst case you'll see the two rookies this year step up next year at RT, and as the 1st backup off the bench and Winston/Smith will be gone.

No chance they let Zeitler leave because of this.

Zeitler is already locked in for next year. 2017 will be a lot less complicated than 2016 when a number of guys are up.
