richig, on the one hand, I agree, yes we have some talented receiving options right now. That's true. The Bears do not HAVE to draft a WR. No way. They also should not overlook one IF the scouts feel that they have a generational opportunity (I used as an example Calvin Johnson) available. I don't know whether there are players that fit that description or not...that's why I said "if the scouts feel". Not you or me. If they think there's a prize WR, and he is a better raw player than even some of the other numerous positions needing upgrade, then I'd hope that's who they draft. You don't have to draft a WR. You also don't avoid it by default. This is the definition of BPA, and with a rare high #7 pick, it is particularly crucial that they get someone elite. It doesn't matter where. They need to get someone elite. Potentially even a WR.
I sort of put our odds of drafting a WR with #7 at around 20%. If I were laying money down, I don't think that's how the draft will go, but drafts are crazy, so who knows.
This is supposed to be a very rich draft in terms of WRs. I've basically heard that this is a WR and pass rusher rich draft, and most of the other positions seem pretty weak. I don't know if that's true or not, pre-draft scuttlebutt is notoriously unreliable, but that's what I've heard. If it is true, and given that it is more important that we get lasting contributors somewhere rather than must-haves at any specific positions, then - while we can wait for later rounds and maybe get lucky - we need to get something out of this draft, and that something maybe in the positions with known talent available.
