That would be a massive "fuck off" if he did. The part of this that makes no sense is why are they hiring a coach and don't have a GM in place. Does the GM know this is the coach and too bad for him? Seems like an ass backwards deal...or am I missing something...
No, you're right about the ass-backwards part of it. It's dicey for both parties. GMs want "their guy" to be coaching the team, so if it turns out that the new GM and new coach don't see eye-to-eye, how long will it be before the coach is looking for a new job elsewhere? Plus, GMs seem to have a one- or two-coach mulligan before fans start calling for the GMs job, so the GM pretty much has zero to lose in that scenario. The coach would be giving up what in Shanahan's case is a pretty sweet gig to roll the dice in a situation that looks pretty unstable to an outsider's view. On the other hand, I don't think anyone knows what was promised to Shanahan to make the 49er job look that attractive to him (if he does indeed take the job). If Shanahan was given any personnel control, that's hypothetically two reasons right there (not picking his coach and not having the final say on players) to make a potential GM candidate reconsider that job. It'll be interesting to see how all that pans out for the 49ers...
