...of the active roster? Why does the NFL not allow all 53 guys on your roster to suit up on game day??? I'm just not seeing a point to this other than to make things more complicated for coaches. It certainly doesn't add any value to the fans to reduce the roster size and it's not like it saves the owners any money. If someone has any clue I'd love to hear it

It is supposed to be for competitive balance. For example if team A has 5 players hurt and Team B has 2 players hurt Team B has 3 more healthy players that they could potentially play that team A can not. But if the NFL limits the roster too I believe 46 players both teams have the same amount of players and no competitive advantage is created.

I thought it was so that every team will have a few injuries. Having an active roster number 7 spots fewer than the 53 would ensure, almost, that every team would have the same number of players available. Of course, not all injuries are equal, as one to The QB is not the same as to a third string WR, but the idea is level roster numbers on game day.

I answered this before last year and asked others here if I was right in this were the case and a few here confirmed it. There's a chance that a few of us were wrong.

S/N this why you sometimes see blowouts in college football when the away team is a powerhouse and the home team is mediocre/bad. The away teams are only allowed to bring so many players on the trip and sometimes the 3rd stringers are as good as the starters on the home team plus they are fresher and it's hard to tell a kid that don't play not to score TDs

thanks for the answers. i guess this is just another reason why the NFL's IR system is outdated and needs an overhaul.

I meant to say "because every team will have a few injuries," not "so that every team will have a few injuries." I changed one part without changing the other part of the sentence.
