Two obvious needs:
First base
A #2 or #3 veteran starting pitcher

Other need:
Another right-handed arm in the bullpen.

I expected Iwakuma to have been locked up by now. With each passing day that he doesn't sign here, I think there odds against him sign here grow significantly. I think Dipoto is going to drop some cash at either first base or starting pitching, but not both.

If Iwakuma does not sign, suddenly they have extra money for first base. What might Dipoto do? Who is available at first base in trade or FA? The candidates:
Todd Frazier - Reds are having a fire sale. Not sure we have the prospects it will take to get him.
Stephen Vogt - Billy Beane is always looking to tweak his team.
Carlos Santana -
Edwin Encarnacion - going into his walk year. Toronto may look to move him while they can still get something for him.
Brandon Moss -Non-tender candidate
Pedro Alvarez - non-tender candidate
Michael Cuddyer - Mets would love to dump him, especially if they spend big bucks on Zobrist and Cespedes.

I think Iwa will become a Giant or Yankee...

I could live with Pedro Alvarez from the Pirates... He's basically Trumbo with much better defense...

This I would like;

Marlins non-tendered RHP Henderson Alvarez.

Alvarez is currently rehabbing from the season-ending shoulder surgery he underwent in July, but it's possible he'll be ready to pitch at or near the start of the 2016 season. And yet the Marlins opted to non-tender him rather than go to arbitration. When healthy, the 25-year-old right-hander has a legitimate major league arm. In his last full season (2014), he pitched to a 2.65 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 111/33 K/BB ratio over 187 innings. Alvarez also registered three shutouts that year for Miami. There should be a ton of interest awaiting him on the open market.

my friends over on a big angels board understand that their farm situation is so shitty, the only way they can contend is if arte moreno goes over the luxury tax threshold for the first time ever this season.

when you have nothing to trade except that which you desperately need yourself, this is what happens.

it would take a massive payroll bump for the m's to even be in the top 3 in our division this year, imo. i know that some on here don't want to hear it, but that's just reality as i see it. i don't blame dipoto one bit considering how tightass nintendo is combined with the disaster that jack z left in his wake.

I remember what he did to the M's a couple years ago. Shutout on 90 pitches I think

I worried that it could be a guy like Ike Davis, especially if Dipoto spends a large chunk of the remaining budget on Iwakuma or another pitcher.

Cliff Lee cleared to return to pitching. I would welcome him back to Seattle...

Wonder what it'd take to get Ender Inciarte from the D-Backs? Seems he'd be a good fit to play RF/CF.

They just spent $206M on a pitcher so I doubt they are trading starters. They are full in.

Yeah I just saw that...34M per....amazing.

Wonder if they'd be willing to make a trade for Seth Smith++? Probably not. It'd free up cap room (since they're on a budget) while adding more speed and defense.

I have said from Day 1 that they will trade Smith and I think that even more today. They said Aoki will play mostly LF while just a couple weeks back Dipoto said LF is filled with Smith/Guti. What gives? And why do we need to shed so much payroll? Can't we finally spend like the big boys? Faith fading....fast.

I find Smith to be an unlikely trade candidate, mostly because Smith fits the profile of the type of guys that Dipoto wants to go out and get. I'd be pretty sad to see Smith moved as I see him as one of the most competent hitters on the team.

except the athletic part and a good defender. his arm is weak.

I mean mostly in terms of the fact that Smith is a value player. There's nothing that really jumps off at you on the baseball card statistics, but Smith is great at working the count and IMO sees balls and strikes better than anyone else on the team. Offensively I believe he's worth vastly more than he's being paid.
