why is it so hard to get a play off in 40 seconds? I see high school teams do just fine without the play clock in front of them and mic in the helmet. amazing watching teams blow important timeouts over and over again. the bears do it more than anyone

Just my 2 cents but it usually falls on the coordinators. They usually take long to get the proper personal in and take long to give the QB the play

More sophisticated defensive looks, faster and better athletes, that can hurt you if you make a mistake. QB is in a constant war with the safeties, to where the latter are lined up. Also, remember that in the NFL, you have centers calling different protection schemes. There's a lot going on out there, and there's $ involved.

still just excuses imo. the amount of time they waste after a play screwing around is amazing. these coordinators make big bucks. they should be 2 steps ahead on every play. burning timeouts is unacceptable imo. u have the guy in your ear. if u r not at the line with 20+ seconds on the clock u r doing something wrong

The coaches are also looking at what plays they've called in the given down-and-distance, what has worked, what hasn't, and what they haven't tried in the given situation. Chess game.

It happens. It shouldn't but to compare it to the demands of calling plays in HS ball is silly.

Those other coordinators make big bucks too though and are trying to be 2 steps ahead themselves.

A lot of time is burned in making adjustments on the line after getting looks at the coverage. Teams are better off burning a time out then running a play into unfavorable coverage.

One of the reasons high school is a lot easier with play calling is because the playbooks, plays etc are a lot less complex than in the NFL.

For example when I was in high school we ran the ball 70% of the time or so and there are only so many different runs you can call.

Its also much louder in a NFL stadium than a high school game especially during the playoffs. The noise can really slow things down at times.
