what happened to Montreal Canadiens?

The franchise that has the most Stanley Cup wins and a franchise that seems to have a very long and rich tradition in winning. They haven't been good in a few years, what happened to this franchise>?

Bad season. Very poor direction under Pierre Gauthier(who has been fired). Scott Gomez a 7 million dollar a season black hole.

They do have some good pieces to build around though and a top 3 pick coming this summer.

First miss in a while I think. They went to the Eastern Conference Finals two seasons ago and came very close to beating the eventual Cup champion Bruins last year.

He was, according to my goalie rating formula, statistically the fourth best goaltender in the NHL this year.

Elliot just happened to be #1.

Also, Halak started more games than Elliot this season.

Matt's comment is dead on though. That French speaking and players first crap is what has them in the stone age. They are so worried about their pro french fans causing an uproar they cave to the pressure.

Jeff Molson should just get up there and ask the public a question: "You want to bitch about French issues or do you want the Canadiens to win?"

my sarcasm that blue got was that the team focuses more on what the fans (actually the PROVINCE) bitches about most. not enough french on their team so it throws it into chaos. its a long long long discussion on Montreal really as they try to appease their province.

The Gomez trade certainly hurt them. However, Brian Gionta missed most of the season which was a bigger loss than I thought it would be. Thomas Plekanec had a down year. The positive about Montreal is they don't seem to have a problem signing UFA's. Their latest Eric Cole had a GREAT season.
