I know this thread would normally be a Dodgers thing, but Vin is really the longest tenured announcer in the sports history - No one has done what this guy has done. I am 56 years old and remember Vin announcing the games when I wasn't even ten years old, so having him come back one more year just thrills my heart. I salute Vin Scully

When he goes, it'll be like losing a family member. I'm terrified.

I know what you mean - 67 years of broadcasting - the guy was doing it before I was born. What a legend

It's always a time to celebrate when you get another year of Scully.

He's the best in the biz, hands down. No else comes close.

This.

It'll be the end of an era in American sports.

I keep watching Dodgers home games and I keep listening for any sign that Vin has lost a step. I've seen none.

He is still the very best in the business.

Oh, he shows his age often. He'll say "Juan Pierre" instead of "Juan Uribe" and other things like that. I swear it took him 5 tries to get Giavotella down earlier this year. He's also pretty iffy on identifying the pitches. He gets fooled just like a batter, it seems. Plenty of times, I've seen a slider that he says is a curve. He's called change-ups as fastballs. If there's ever an off-speed pitch he's just as likely to call it "a change" or a "breaking ball."

And none of that matters. I was talking to another lifelong Dodger fan (who's in his 60s) about that and he summed it up perfectly. "Trivial." Sure, they're technically gaffes but they are so trivial. They don't break the ability to enjoy the way he calls the game, tells the score, recalls some random utility guy from the early 70s, etc. When he gets the small details wrong, it's nothing. It's just a guy from another era who's not there to be technical. He's telling you the story of the game, as it's happening, and as it relates to baseball history. No one, no one, no one does it better.

While we're here, can we also take this moment to appreciate the fact that Hank Aaron broke Ruth's record while playing the Dodgers? Hearing Scully's call is chilling (easy to find on YouTube, worth a listen). He does a perfect job putting the play and moment into historical perspective as it was happening. He talks about a black man in the South playing a white man's game and breaking a white man's record in a time when racial tensions were at their apex. He didn't acknowledge the significance in hindsight after reflection. No, he did it right then and there, on live TV, and he nailed it.

He's really a treasure and we're so lucky to have him. One of my favorite stories about Vin Scully is the one where he was in his backyard with his kids. He did play-by-play as they did cannonballs, screwdrivers, etc. Can you imagine how awesome that would be?

My number one wish is that if the Dodgers make it into the World Series, if he's alive then he should be calling those games. Joe Buck and company can just take a seat, shut up, and listen and learn from the best. I don't care whose contract says what. Scully should be on national TV calling those games for the whole nation to hear.

I think, I will cry because he has just been amazing and for the record, we Lakers fans were extremely blessed, and lucky as hell to have the Late Chick Hearns for so many years, so a sports fan that loved both the Dodgers and Lakers were happy as hell to have the two best of the business combined. No other announcers were ever better then these two.

With all due respect, even mentioning Joe Buck in this thread is a travesty.

I get goosebumps thinking about Chick's call when Magic hit the hook at the foul line at Boston Garen.

"You gotta shoot it, Maj!"

I got to speak to him less then six months before he passed. He didn't like it because I was concerned about his health. He insisted that he was fine. It was really a huge loss. I'm not even sure I can remain a Dodgers fan without Scully - Honestly I just wonder

Perhaps the best of all time, the guy should be able to broadcast as long as he's able.

I'm a Giants fan that lives in the LA area with a big commute who listens to Dodger games just to hear his voice and this post is exactly my sentiments. I hate all things Dodgers...except Vin. He's definitely showing his age as Villain eluded to, but he was and is the best that's ever done it. He has an amazing knack for verbally massaging the moment with the right amount of pressure at the right places. My wife is a Dodgers fan as well as her whole family, so I'm pretty sure we may have a vigil at our house when Scully passes.

It just blows the mind when they play a classic game from a playoffs from 20 to 30 years ago and you are still listening to the same announcer. How unreal is that?

Although I may be a bit biased for Bob Uecker - Scull has to be regarded as the GOAT of broadcasting.
