He was extremely lucky to get that call, I would say he retreated into the endzone himself in an attempt to escape, before being tackled. Refs ruled it as what you say that happened.

Missed some of it, but sounds like the refs in the Rams/49ers game are awful, and having a real impact on the outcome of the game. They got themselves the nice cop out on the return. How these idiots could think Austin actually stepped out of bounds AND WHISTLE THE PLAY DEAD is just stunning...

Possibly - though to what extent the 49ers would even have had a chance if the refs had called the unsportsmanlike conduct (the slamming into the ground) in favour of the Rams on their final drive as they should is also something to be considered...
