Can someone explain to me, someone who does not follow college football closely, what happened at the end of the Florida State/Miami game. Miami had the ball and spiked it with 2 seconds left. The ref said you can't do that with less than 3 seconds left and declared the game over. Anyone else catch this?

That's been the rule since 2013. You must have 3 sec or more to spike the ball snd stop the clock.

He spiked at 2 seconds, so the play was still live and time ran out. End of game.

Thanks. That's some fucked up rule IMO. What is the purpose of that? Why deny the team all 60 minutes?

Supposedly.....

They tested it and determined that it takes :02 full seconds to successfully run a play to spike the ball and stop the clock.

Therefor to make it less of a judgment call, they ruled that the clock must read :03 for you to do that.

And

The reasoning is that there have been controversies about when the clock should have started on spike plays and if the clock should have run out or not. This rule change makes everyone aware of whether or not the offense will have enough time to spike it.

Thanks for this Bama. I guess it makes sense now that you have explained it.
