Looking ahead already - Omaha.com

6:42 p.m., Wednesday: It's early. Way too early. But that hasn't stopped a few national news outlets from making predictions about a football season that's more than seven months away.

Of course, there's a legitimate possibility that a few more stars from various teams across the country could still leave for the NFL by Saturday. Winter conditioning isn't even underway. Signing day and spring football will certinaly provide a few useful clues about how things might unfold next fall.

Yet some are speculating anyway. So we've compiled a few of the Nebraska-related highlights:

> Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples has Nebraska ranked 12th, listing the Huskers as the Big Ten's second-best team – ahead of Wisconsin (No. 15) and Michigan State (No. 16) but behind Ohio State (No. 6). He mentions Jared Crick as the key to the NU defense.

> ESPN's Mark Schlabach ranks Nebraska at No. 19, citing a tough schedule and a disappointing season finale. He has Wisconsin at No. 12 and Michigan State at No. 15. Ohio State's No. 10.

> LostLettermen.com has Nebraska at No. 11, calling the Big Ten Legends division “weak.”

> Nebraska didn't make the top 10 on The Big Lead blog, but the website does think that soon-to-be sophomore quarterback Taylor Martinez is an early contender for the Heisman Trophy. Martinez is listed with Michigan's Denard Robinson as two potential stars who need to stay healthy to have a chance.

Notre Dame is easily the most overrated team for next year. Missouri is losing a lot yet they kept them up there still, too lazy?

Deja Vu all over again.

Fucking teases, get me all excited and then leave me frustrated.
I ain't going to do it again. They need to put up or shut up next year. I am not going to get all excited like a teenager who got a phone call from the cheer leader at a sleepover. This lines been disconnected.

I'm N

Even with a crappy offense, Nebraska's got defense and that makes them a contender.

A pick 6 or fumble return for TD here or there and they would have played in the Fiesta bowl last season.

If a couple of real leaders can emerge on offense, maybe they can execute a little better next season regardless of coaching. My expectations there couldn't get any worse, so it'll be hard to disappoint me further.

But it's something to ponder sir......... :D

I think 15 or so is bout right......

Yes sir, it is something to ponder... you are so very correct...

I guess being intensely involved makes me cringe at thinking about next year when we still have unanswered questions as to whom is going to control what and whom may live up to our expectations.

I don't know what to think about next year. So many unanswered questions to dwell upon.

The fact that we will be dealing with a whole new set of competitors is one, the fact that our play unraveled from the Iowa State game on is troubling and the fact that we have voids to fill causes me to pause.

I will say this... If we were to somehow fix two issues, I think we can put up a better record and showing then we did this year in regards to final records.

Those two issues are (ball security and penalties). If Bo can get this group to become more disciplined (in all facets) we will be hard to beat, even with the inept offence that we all think we see. You have to admit, if we were able to cut our stupid penalties to a minimum this past year and cut our ball handling issues out, we would have won every game we lost. Each loss we had this past year was by our own doing and lack of ball control or a penalty(was at a time where we were in a position to take the lead or take control of the game) which if we would not have had those issues, could have propelled us into a winning scenario. Just f'in dumb ass mistakes caused our "O" to put our "D" in a bad position. I can say the same in some instances where our "D" had a stop and a penalty kept the other team in the game.

So with all this nonsense gibberish I just wrote, I will say that if we just fix and mend this stupid issues we had this year, we, (I would hope) would be in a much better position next year.

I cannot predict how are kids will react during winter and spring conditioning, but I know Bo has already installed the (Be disciplined always) mentality, and if you noticed prior to the bowl game, this was something he was hitting on, thus "his speech about our servicemen and the discipline that is necessary to get where you need to be in life, no matter what your goals are."

He is growing as a head coach but need to practice what he preaches in regards to sideline antics without losing his fire. I suggested he get one of those pro style microphones that cover his mouth a little more, so people cannot read his lips... We will see if that happens this next year... LOL!

I don't think the suggestion was well received as jokes were then made around that he would need to put a helmet on with one of those dark face masks to cover what needs to be covered.......

We shall see....

Go Big Red...
