By today's standards, yes he was. Probably more the norm for the time period though.

I don't know, watching that video made me realize that all of the accusations come from Stump, the dishonest biographer. I'm not saying he definitely wasn't, but I don't know that he should be labeled as such just because he was born in 1886 in Georgia.

Yeah, he's not as bad of a guy as people have believed for so long, but there weren't many people at the turn of the century who wouldn't be considered racist by today's standards.

No, it wasn't. That's the whole point of my video. That video was based on the biography of Al Stump- a guy who held a grudge against Cobb and whose stories have been largely disproven.

First off, there is bigotry and there is racism. We seem to conflate the two but while Cobb might not have liked people of color, he probably would have played ball alongside them had that been the way of the day. Racism is really a different set of rules from just disliking people.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at... if someone doesn't like someone because of the color of their skin, aren't they a racist? I could be misunderstanding your point

Well, they could be a racist, but racism specifically is act or deed that demeans or harms people because of their race.

For this conversation, it's probably nitpicking. Cobb's attitudes toward people of color was most likely consistent with his time and social up bringing. He probably thought blacks were inferior and probably worked to keep them out of baseball. Probably. But I don't know for sure.

If he just disliked them and had no effect on whether they played, he was just a bigot. I read that he was a butthead anyhow.

Cobb had some completely fictional biography work done on him just prior to and immediately following his death.

The narrative of him as some crazy racist monster sold. And stuck.

Very little to actually back up the things said about him and his racist hatred. (Al Stump I believe is the author who created the narrative.)
