Pace is key for the UVA game. Bennett is a disciple of stall ball. UVA's entire game plan revolves around playing solid D and milking every last second of the clock. We cannot allow them to dictate the tempo. They're more than happy to watch Eric Green dribble around the perimeter for 34 seconds and shoot a mid-range shot (and if that happens, UVA will win). We gotta outrebound them as well because if the pace does slow down, each possession becomes more valued and rebounds = possessions (man that sounded dumb)

It would be sooooo nice to see VT win this one in particular.

I agree with the comment above -- it will be about who controls the pace, but then again, in basketball control is the key.

Any chance Mike London will be in attendance? You've got to think that couldn't hurt or chances.

In all seriousness, the only road game they've won was Wisconsin. They've lost games at George Mason, Wake Forest, Clemson and against ODU in Richmond. UVa is completely beatable in this atmosphere. However, their defense in the half court too good, and they play patiently on offense. Efficiency is their game, and they play it well. We've been extremely inefficient.

The home crowd and an aggressive attacking approach is our best hope. We're going to need transition points. Minimize their efficient approach and take risks to put up points. Getting those points on the board then forces UVA against their desire to run down the clock and wait for the best shot every possession. IMO, if none of our players foul out it'll be because we're well ahead or well behind.

Sorry for placing the bet. As soon as the team found out I bet vcash on them they decided to let UVA dictate the pace, to not guard the 3 point shot at all, and they all got together and decided to not do a damn thing on offense except watch Green bust his ass.

Giving up 74 points to UVA really tells the story of how pathetic VT's defense is. And WTF was up with Rankin guarding Harris half the game?....yeah, that worked well. 6'-0" guarding 6'-6"....JJ really thought that one out.

I only got to see the first 10 minutes (so you can blame me for not sticking around, since we apparently tanked when I had to step away). But we had been playing zone. Did JJ switch them into man later?

Rankin is our best on-ball defender, so you might put him on Harris in an effort to take away the drive, but yeah, you give him open shots from distance by doing that. If they did switch into man, that would kinda negate the purpose of that switch unless you're betting Harris will miss. Harris was 4 of 6 from long range, and at least one of those makes I remember while we were in zone, so it doesn't seem like he completely torched Rankin from deep. Was he making a lot of pullups over him or something?

Looking at the boxscore, Nolte may have been the bigger problem. I don't think our guys know how to effectively rotate a big man out to cover that kind of height from outside when playing zone.

we should change the thread title to Erick Green Basketball Week 12.

Between no one being able to score, other than Green, and UVA shooting fucking 120% from 3 in the first half, missing FT's and nearly tripling the amount of turnovers, we didnt stand a chance

The barrage of 3's certainly killed VT pretty much all game long, but the moment when you knew it just wasn't their night was when the guy from UVa went to slam the ball and missed it, it bounced off of about 3 spots on the rim, hit the backboard, rattled around the rim a bit more then dropped in. Even the UVa players were laughing at that one.

On a brighter note, the resident hoo here in the office came in this morning and said Green was "special" and raved about him. It was the first time he had seen Green in person and said he went straight home, turned on his DVR and found the spot in the game where Green buckled the UVa defender and left him on his ass. He said as ugly as that was on TV, it was worse in person.

Don't bother thinking about it. Nothing we do defensively makes any sense. We even went back to doubling guys in the post even though UVA has 0 post players. I don't think they have a single guy that's over 6'7 or something. JJ needs to hire a defensive or just gtfo. I'm probably bitter losing to UVA but most of the game I was like "WTF are they trying to do?"

This is gonna be another beat down. Clemson, like UVA, plays great defense. VT wont be able to keep up.

Tied at half. Nice way to battle back. 12-15 FT's. Only getting outrebounded by 2.
